Reviews for the Medion Erazer X6813 (MD97762)
Price-performance hit. Medion commandingly proved that honest-to-goodness gaming notebooks don't necessarily have to be expensive. For a fair 1149 Euros, the Erazer X6813 boasts a current quad-core from Intel as well as Nvidia's GeForce GTX 460M. Too good to be true?

Our experiences with the Medion Erazer X6813 have been disappointing. On paper we were expecting great things, after all it is hard to go wrong with a formidable combination of Core i7 2630QM processor paired up with Nvidia GTX460M discrete graphics.

Medion’s 15.6in Erazer X6813 gaming laptops provide some of the best bargains to be had for true gaming performance in a mobile package, punching far above their price thanks to GTX460M graphics and Full HD screens across the range (even on the £750 base model) – a decision for which we can only applaud the German manufacturer. Our £999 MD97762 review configuration provides a mix of powerful components under its relatively attractive hood, with an average, non-backlit keyboard and poor speakers as our only real complaints. If you want a powerful gaming laptop without breaking the bank, the Erazer X6813s are unrivalled.

Medion’s Erazer range focuses on high-end notebooks and the X6813 follows suit. On the positive side we can’t find a more powerful graphics card on a cheaper laptop, but unless gaming is your first priority we would suggest taking a good look at the Dell XPS 15Z, which matches the Erazer’s other specs but features a decent-quality chassis.

The tech snob inside us wants to trash the Medion for its money saving approach to design and its bulky feel. The problem is every time we boot the laptop up and get gaming, we realise none of that matters. What is important is power and lots of it. No one can argue with the Erazer in the specs department, for the cost it is pretty much unrivalled. Some may want to pay that little bit extra to get the quality that something like an Alienware brings, but personally we believe once you are staring at the screen it is all about how the game looks. For those in the market for a powerful gaming laptop or perhaps a portable cousin to a desktop, the Medion Erazer X6813 comes highly recommended.

So can a gaming notebook with a mediocre screen and build quality be recommended on the grounds of gaming performance alone? It all depends on how you intend to use the Medion Erazer X6813. Its uses are limited by short battery life, but it does compare favourably to other manufacturer's offerings at this price.

Medion has previously impressed us with some of its low cost, yet very powerful gaming laptops. The X6813 is the latest model to be added to its gaming stable. It's not the most handsome gaming laptop we've ever clapped eyes on, and its display could be better, but the Erazer X6813 manages to pack a powerful gaming punch without costing the earth.

The Erazer isn't a bad start for Medion, and we'd like to see it expand its gaming range in the future. But as it stands, it falls just short of being either an unbeatable bargain or the very best looks and performance – and it could have done with being one of either.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M:
High-end DirectX 11 graphics card based on the GF106 chip using GDDR5 graphics memory (up to 1.5 GB).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
15.60":
15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.3.216 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
Medion: Medion AG is a German consumer electronics company. It operates in Europe, the United States, and the Asia-Pacific region. The main products are computers, TVs, refrigerators, toasters, and fitness equipment. The manufacturer of laptops Medion mainly is active in the German market, but to smaller extent also in Western Europe. Market shares and amount of reviews are low. Above all, supermarkets like Aldi sell their laptops. In 2011, Medion has been acquired by the laptop manufacturer Lenovo.
82%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
