ShiftCam has unveiled a tiny SSD for the Apple iPhone, which is connected via USB-C and is said to be smaller than all its competitors. With data rates of up to 1,050 MB/s, the SSD supports the recording of ProRes videos in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second.

ShiftCam is launching one of the smallest SSDs in the world, called Planck. The SSD was specially developed for the Apple iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro because the tiny housing of the SSD is hardly in the way when using the smartphone and only minimally adds to the total weight. This is particularly important when using gimbals during video recording.

Since Apple ProRes videos at 4K resolution and 120 frames per second take up a full 440 MB per second, or 264 GB per ten minutes, external SSDs are vital for such video productions. The SSD reaches data rates of up to 1,050 MB/s, which should be more than fast enough to support all ProRes formats, while a large number of photos and videos can be quickly transferred from the iPhone to the SSD.

ShiftCam Planck is shockproof and IP65 certified, which means that the SSD should be able to withstand heavy rain. ShiftCam also installs a USB-C hub that allows two Planck SSDs to be used simultaneously. This hub also has an HDMI port for connecting an external monitor and viewing media content directly on a larger screen. Last but not least, Planck is cheaper than Apple's storage upgrades: Apple charges an additional $500 for upgrading the iPhone 16 Pro from 128 GB to 1 TB, while a 1 TB ShiftCam Planck "only" costs $189.

Price and availability

The ShiftCam Planck SSD is expected to be available from spring 2025, either with 1 TB of storage for $189 or with 2 TB of storage for $299. As part of a Kickstarter campaign, pre-orders for $125 and $199 respectively will be accepted during the course of January. Details on price and availability of the Planck USB-C hub are still pending.
