Flashstor Gen 2: New and fast network storage devices with space for up to 12 SSDs now available
Asustor, a subsidiary of Asus and provider of network attached storage (NAS) devices, recently launched its Flashstor Gen 2 NAS series, namely the Flashstor 6 Gen 2 (AS6806X) and the Flashstor 12 Pro Gen 2 (FS6812X). These models are direct successors to the Flashstor 6 Gen 1 (FS6706T) and Flashstor 12 Pro Gen 1 (FS6712X), released in 2023, and come with upgraded hardware capabilities, connectivity enhancements and improved thermal management.
The biggest difference, although not the only one, is that the Flashtor 6 Gen2 can hold 6 SSDs, while the Flashtor 12 Gen2 can hold a dozen fast mass storage devices. In addition, the Flashtor 6 Gen2 (FS6806X) is equipped with 8 GB of DDR5 memory, while the FS6812X version has twice as much memory. Up to 64 GB of RAM is supported in two slots, and one slot is already occupied in each model.
Regardless of the variant selected, a Ryzen Embedded V3C14 is installed. Network connectivity can be established via a single Ethernet port with up to 10 GBit/s for the smaller model version, and two Ethernet ports with the same speed are on board the 12-slot variant. Three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type A ports and two USB 4.0 Type C ports are on board, which can also be used for expansion enclosures with conventional magnetic hard disks.
A wide variety of apps are supported. For example, a mail server can be implemented, but the network storage can also be integrated into a comprehensive cloud storage backup concept. VPN servers can be set up, as can a media server. Up to 4,096 users can be created in 512 groups, which allows access rights to be determined in detail and makes the Flashtor network storage suitable not only for individual users, but also for work groups that require quick and simultaneous access to data.
