TCL introduces its 3-in-1 concept device as the Fold 'n Roll
TCL is an OEM already known to be capable of making both foldable and rollable displays. Now, it has combined the two in its latest concept device. Its unique design allows it to take the form of either a 6.87-inch display smartphone, an 8.85-inch phablet or a full 10-inch tablet.
It does this through a "starting pose" quite like that of the outward-folding first-gen Huawei Mate X (which the TCL Fold 'n Roll strongly resembles while in this mode). Therefore, it can act as a double-sided smartphone or sorts - until it is unfolded into its phablet form.
Once in this mode, it can employ its slider to expand to its full 10-inch format. This renders the Fold 'n Roll potentially prepared to display all kinds of content and for all kinds of use-cases. Therefore, it is slightly unfortunate that it is only a concept at this stage.
Its premium appearance and apparently well-developed take on its OEM's flexible technology make this a particular shame. Then again, TCL has hinted that production units of this new 3-in-1 form-factor are the ultimate goal. However, it will go through foldable (or rollable) genres that now look conventional by comparison to get there first.
