According to a new leak, Sony plans to discontinue multiple PSN features it designed for the PlayStation 4. Described as a unifying change, the removal will initially only apply to new PlayStation 4 releases.

The PlayStation 4 arrived almost twelve years ago and was replaced in November 2020 by the PlayStation 5 (curr. $549 on Amazon). In other words, we are likely a good way through the PlayStation 5's lifespan. To that end, recent rumours put the launch of the PlayStation 6 as being between two and three years away.

According to Insider Gaming, Sony is now moving towards phasing out multiple PlayStation Network (PSN) features specific to the PlayStation 4. Namely, the following functionality is set to depart from PSN for Sony's last-generation console, but only for new PlayStation 4 games:

  • Activity Feed Web API
  • Shared Media Web API
  • Title Small Storage (TSS)
  • Title User Storage (TUS)
  • Users and Profiles
  • Word Filters

As the website notes, Sony now considers these legacy features that the PlayStation 5 does not support itself. Apparently, Sony will discontinue these six PSN features sometime during spring 2026, which begins on March 20 in the Northern Hemisphere. While Insider Gaming has not provided a specific date yet, it claims that leaked documentation underlines that these changes will help Sony create a 'more unified and scalable foundation across console generations' rather than slowly winding down PSN support for the PlayStation 4.
