Samsung Series 9 Series

At the Beginning of 2011, Samsung introduced the Series 9 with two new devices, which celebrated their debut at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 in Las Vegas, shortly CES. Simultaneously Samsung has begun to change the series-discriptions and their sorting. In addition to the Ultra-Thin Series 9, Samsung provides the Series 2, 3 (B2C), 4 and 6 for Business-Notebooks, the Series 5 for devices with Google Chrome OS and also the new Series 7 Chronos plus Series 7 Gamer for multimedia- respectively gaming-users.
Back to Samsungs Series 9: After the introduction of the Samsung Series 9 900X3A (13.3 inch) and the smaller 900X1B Subnotebook (11.6 inch) the hype was relatively large, because apparently they seem to be the first available alternative to Apples MacBook Air series, which runs on Apples Mac OS X. High-quality displays and a chassis made of lightweight and sturdy Duraluminium are two key-assets of Samsung Series 9 devices. In comparison to the german retail-market, Samsung provides both devices to their US-Costumers from the beginning. The MSRP located between 1199.99 and 1649.99 US-Dollar.
Major advantages in our reviews of the Samsung Series 9 900X3A and 900X1B are the good battery life, the rapid SSD storage, the convincing display, the LED-Backlit keyboard and furthermore the attractive design. Disadvantages are the limited expandability, the port-positioning, the missing dockingport and the long battery charge time. On average, the review-ratings are above 80 percent and thereby in a good rating range.

Endurance with style. As slim as a MacBook, as fast as a workstation and as portable as a netbook – series 9 reaches for the superlatives and is surprisingly successful in doing so. Why a "very good" is justified even without a VGA port can be read in this review.

However, at $1350, you’ll pay a premium for the breath-taking design and that flawless screen. If you want more computational bang for your buck, take a look at the Acer Aspire S3, but if it’s sumptuous user-experience on a Windows machine you’re after, Samsung Series 9 could be your baby.

Considering it’s substantially slower and lower in resolution than the Air, I was hoping for an Acer-like price tag (in the realm of $900), but that’s not to be. At $1,650, the Series 9 costs $350 more than the similarly equipped Air. I expect Samsung will start slashing prices to something more appropriate as more sub-$1,000 ultrabook competition arrives on the market, but for now this machine’s performance just can’t back up its hefty outlay.

The 13.3-inch Samsung Series 9 is by far one of the thinnest and sexiest Windows notebooks we have seen in a long time, and equipped with the new Sandy Bridge processors, it could very well be one of the most useful ultra-portables we have seen too. The integrated graphics can’t play PC games very well, but its low-voltage, 1.4GHz Core i5 processor and Intel HD 3000 graphics are capable of rendering movies, web pages with flash and spreadsheets just fine.

To many of our readers the Series 9 will look like an almost desperate attempt by Samsung to create a bona fide Macbook Air competitor or at the very least make their presence known in the ultra portable market. Well, a statement has certainly been made; this svelte notebook crams a significant amount of power into its confined chassis and performance is actually quite respectable.

The stunning design of the Series 9 is sleek, slim and sturdy all at the same time. It's amazing that Samsung can pack performance, battery power and the ports you actually need in, along with a great keyboard and screen, plus surprisingly good sound. The 3-year warranty makes this a PC that's good enough for business users (although beware, as not all of the first models released have a TPM chip). So what's not to like? If you’re a perfectionist, the keyboard could be better. The touch pad irritated us far too often and the price is undeniably high (though less than the chunkier ThinkPad X1). A system this thin makes compromises but we think Samsung has made all the right ones. If you fancy an Air but don't want OS X, the Series 9 is almost perfect.

Samsung's Series 9 laptop arrived in a blaze of publicity, with a glamorous unveiling party at Harrods attended by models and, bizarrely, an England international cricketer. This is an impressively portable laptop that looks great. But in terms of computing power it's not a great deal better than a £300 netbook, despite costing more than three times as much

Samsung's Series 9 remains about as refined as an ultraportable can get, but at $2499, that refinement comes at a considerable cost. Deep-pocketed consumers craving the latest in swish ultraportables will be pleased, but with Apple's MacBook Air due for a Sandy Bridge update, the Samsung's wow-factor may be short-lived.

Though it sounds like there are more downsides than upsides in this review, we've come at it at a particularly harsh angle. It's definitely not perfect, but it's so much better than many thin and light notebooks out there. What it does have going for it, it does brilliantly. It's supremely fast for its category.

Priced at AED 6,999, the Samsung Series 9 certainly comes out a bit on the pricey side. But when you look at the competition, or the MacBook Air 13?, that sells for around the same with a slightly worse CPU but a better battery life and GPU. If Windows is your thing, then the Samsung Series 9 is definitely your best choice for something that is incredibly thin and stylish with good performance.

Just as the original 13-inch Samsung Series 9 laptop was a direct shot across the bow of the 13-inch MacBook Air, this new 11.6-inch version is aimed squarely at the smaller version of the Air. The smaller, 11.6-inch version of Samsung's excellent Series 9 laptop is thin and light, and has a few features the MacBook Air lacks, but it's more expensive and doesn't trump the competition where it counts.

This raises the question of values. If a stylish, stand-out design is of paramount importance, the Series 9 brings it—more so than any other ultraportable PC around—while offering respectable features and performance. But better features and performance can be found in an ultraportable form factor that makes less of a fashion statement.

Is the Series 9 impressive enough to warrant the price, though? The top-spec Air is cheaper and, although it lacks the Samsung's USB 3.0, HDMI and Ethernet ports, it has a higher-resolution screen and a proper SD card reader. The Samsung 900X3A is indeed lovely, but on balance we’d stick with the Mac. However, if you must have Windows 7, this is the closest thing to a MacBook Air you’ll find, and that’s pretty high praise.

While it's more powerful than the MacBook Air, the Samsung NP900X3A suffers from the same faults, namely limited connectivity and very low capacity in games. It is, nevertheless, a light, well-finished, high-quality model that'll make an excellent alternative for those who don't want to use Mac OS.

With its sleek and strong design, ultra-bright display, excellent keyboard and touchpad, and fast performance, the Samsung Series 9 is one of the most compelling premium ultraportables we've tested. However, $1,649 is a lot of money to spend on a laptop, even when you factor in the three-year warranty. The 13-inch MacBook Air delivers longer battery life, better graphics, and a higher-res display for $350 less, and you can get a 256GB SSD inside for $50 less than the Series 9. The Series 9 isn't an Air killer, but it is a killer Windows notebook that combines plenty of style and substance. We just wish it lasted longer on a charge.

Whatever your buying motivation, the Samsung is worthy of your attention. It's lightweight but powerful, and it's beautiful but practical. We wish all Windows-based PCs were made with this much style, although we appreciate why that's not possible in a market led by low cost machines. If you have the money to spend, this is a capable and desirable machine with impressive processing power and battery life, making it a useful tool. It won't suit every business or every employee, but this has to be one of the best notebooks available.

The Samsung Series 9 is packing more power than any other Windows ultra portable, and it does so in an attractive looking shell. That said, the £1299 pricetag is something you need to give a long hard think about. If size and reasonable (rather than maximum) power is your primary concern, the 11-inch MacBook Air will save you plenty of money at £867 – but won’t render video as quickly.

She is an absolute beauty with the brushed metal and super slim profile. On paper, the specs sounded really good too, including Core i5, 8GB of DDR3, and a 256GB SSD.

Haute Couture. Samsung wants to continue the success story of the bigger 900X3A with the 900X1B of the Series 9. The South Korean company fuses performance and battery life in an ultra slim and undoubtedly elegant case made of Duraluminum. Read in this review, if Samsung has launched its first ultrabook onto the market with the 900X1B and if the Apple MacBook Air 11 has to reinforce its efforts.

The Samsung Series 9 NP900X3A-B01UB is still thoroughly competitive with its ultrabook-come-lately competition. It doesn't topple either the MacBook Air or Asus UX31 in our affections—both of those systems offer higher screen resolution and better benchmark numbers—but it's an appealing contender, from its slim front bezel to its backlit keyboard.

A Timeless Design. We didn't think Samsung could do it, but they have managed to turn an already superthin design even thinner and lighter. Has performance and quality suffered along the way? We find out here in our in-depth review of the 2nd generation 13.3-inch Series 9.

Although it's not marketed under Intel's Ultrabook branding, Samsung's new Series 9 900X3B laptop is an Ultrabook in all but name. The pricy Samsung Series 9 900X3B isn't perfect, but it's currently the best Windows alternative to the Apple Macbook Air thanks to its superb build quality, good screen and reasonably long battery life.

Thanks to the 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM, the 900X3B is more than fast enough for most everyday tasks. The memory can't be upgraded beyond 4GB though. 4GB is enough for now, but it may be a problem in future as software tends to become more memory intensive.

If you want a slim, light and stylish notebook with a high quality, high resolution display then the 13-inch Samsung Series 9 must be on your shortlist. If you value the display above everything else, then there’s very little competition. However, achieving the slim and light form factor has necessitated some compromises, particularly the below-average battery capacity and the congested ports, many of which need dongles, while Samsung are charging a premium to the users who value this notebook’s attributes. Performance is below average but is still more than adequate for most applications.

Samsung's Series 9 continues to serve as an indication of what tomorrow's computers will offer; strong performance, ultra-fast responsiveness and lush visuals in an exquisitely-thin and luxuriously-crafted form factor. This is, quite simply, the most beautiful laptop we've experienced and only in person will you get a true feel for how impossibly thin and light it really is.

More than anything, the 15-inch Series 9 makes us giddy about what laptops will look like a year from now. After all, if the original Series 9 foretold a market full of skinny Ultrabooks, might this machine be a harbinger for other larger-screened Ultrabooks with fast performance and extra long battery life?

There’s no doubt that the Samsung Series 9 900X3B is a portable PC which will appeal more to style conscious web surfers than power hungry power users. Like the MacBook Air, however, we can forgive the Series 9 these shortcomings. It’s a slick product, and the root of our affections extend beyond lab tests and number crunching.

Despite its weaknesses, the Series 9 is a bewitching prospect: the combination of beauty, burly build and a class-leading display are enough to set anyone’s credit card twitching. And you’ve got to hand it to Samsung: the pricing is bold at £100 dearer than a comparable MacBook Air, and £200 more than the Asus Zenbook UX31E.

The Samsung Series 9 900X3B is not just the thinnest, lightest 13in laptop in the world, but it’s also the best-looking, best sounding ultraportable we’ve come across. Its high-resolution PLS screen offers quality above any other laptop display on the market, its connectivity isn’t compromised by its sleek lines, and it’s great to use too with an excellent backlit keyboard and large, sensitive touchpad. Weighed against all this goodness, the 900X3B’s average battery life seems a minor downer, and overall Samsung’s latest ultraportable is worth every penny of its premium price.

The new Series 9, the Samsung Series 9 900X3B, is not something that the Korean giant has chosen to label an Ultrabook. Specs-wise it is one, but the only conclusion we can draw is that is that "ultra" doesn't cover it. It's better than that.

On the face of it this beautifully designed, slim and feather-light laptop is a business laptop extraordinaire, for Windows devotees. Its design, keyboard and Intel i5-powered performance is awesome, though we’re not sure it’s suited to anyone than the short-hop business traveller. The battery life is simply too short, and at this price, the Micro HDMI to VGA converter cable ought to be bundled. As a piece of technology for the home it’s awesome – the ultrabook era starts here.

The new Series 9 is a tantalizing machine, and it fills the niche of the 15-inch Ultrabook. But I know Samsung can do a better job on the keyboard and touchpad. Until they do, you may want to opt for a cheaper Ultrabook with more accurate input devices, unless you're absolutely set on a 15-inch screen.

Are larger-scale ultrabooks the laptop version of "Dead man walking"? The latest Samsung Series 9 goes extra-big, and the gamble pays off with the most portable and comfortable 15-incher you're likely to find. However, its high price and lack of higher-end features don't make it the best value.

By contrast, if your workload centers on office productivity suitable for an ultrabook, your choice will come down to the Samsung's big, bright screen versus some ultrabooks' better keyboards and full-sized ports. The latter factors, and its lower price, keep the HP Folio 13 in place as our ultrabook Editors' Choice, but the Series 9 15-inch joins the HP Envy 14 Spectre as a premium alternative.

The Samsung Series 9 15-inch is a notebook that straddles multiple categories. It has the screen size of a mainstream laptop but is light and thin enough to be considered an ultraportable. We love its spacious 1600 x 900 display, amazingly fast boot time, and long battery life. Yet, for a $1,499 system, there's a few things that are lacking. The keyboard travel is somewhat shallow for our tastes, and we'd like a visual or tactile cue between the left and right mouse buttons.

Ultrabooks are definitely not anything new. However, Samsung hopes to do better than the rest with their updated 2012 model of the Series 9 laptop, which comes in either 13.3- or 15-inch models. We reviewed the 15-inch one and were amazed by its thinness as well as its internal specs and performance.

Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
