Realme rose to be a top 5 hearable (or audio wearables with a smart component) brand in research on the Indian sector of this market during the first quarter of 2020 (1Q2020). Now, a new Counterpoint Research report on the same space for 2Q2020 has found the OEM has taken the No.1 spot in its TWS earbud sub-sector. Its success is based on the increasing affordability of the devices in question.

The TWS category of hearables has been found to be doing good business in India, whereas the market for other electronics such as smartphones are floundering thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. The latest Counterpoint Research report on this subject found that it has grown by an impressive 656% year-on-year (YoY) in 2Q2020.

The report also reveals that the top 5 individual brands are now pTron (with 6% of the market); boAt (10%); JBL (15%); Xiaomi (20%) and, finally, Realme with a 22% share. This is particularly striking as this OEM only released its first pair of TWS buds at the end of 2019. It posted this news to its official Indian Twitter channel, as if to show its enthusiasm for this rapidly-emerging new division.

Counterpoint has noted that the Indian TWS space owes its healthy growth to the increased availability of devices at lower price-tiers, which drew increasing numbers of consumers into the market. Despite this, lower-end buds accounted for a 10% share of the overall hearables market. Nevertheless, the analysts project that it has the potential for more in the coming quarter.
