A comparison has been made between the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Google Pixel 7 Pro in regard to the capabilities of their selfie cameras. The Pixel 7 Pro’s front-facing camera has been widely praised for capturing natural-looking images, but the example produced by the Galaxy S23 Ultra in this instance looks to be next level in terms of quality.

Photography-related leaks for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra have already whetted the appetite and the same provider of those images, Edwards Urbina, has now provided a selfie image comparison between the upcoming premium flagship phone and the Google Pixel 7 Pro. The two shots show Urbina in the same location and wearing the same clothes, presumably taken at the same time of day to keep the comparison fair. While the Pixel 7 Pro’s effort is decent enough, the Galaxy S23 Ultra selfie camera photo appears to be on a whole different quality level.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra selfie sample is very detailed and well defined. Urbina hasn’t personally commented yet on whether the skin tone capture is accurate, but compared to other images in his Twitter feed, it seems the S23 Ultra has done a fine job of producing a realistic representation. The less-distinguishable features of his face, such as the lines created by bone structure, have been depicted strongly by the Samsung phone whereas the Google Pixel 7 Pro’s effort has a more blurred overtone to it.

Arguably, the biggest detail difference to be seen between the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro is in the original poster’s hair. Again, the effort from the Google phone is of a good standard, but it offers much lower definition and sharpness than the selfie shot from the S23 Ultra, where it is practically possible to make out every individual strand of hair. Camera review specialists DXOMARK thought highly of the Google Pixel 7 Pro selfie camera, giving the 10.8 MP, f/2.2 sensor at the front a score of 142, leaving the smartphone in fifth place in the selfie camera table, behind a couple of phones from Apple and a couple from Huawei.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra didn’t fare as well in this particular field, with DXOMARK awarding the selfie camera a score of 135 (Exynos model). In fact, according to the review site's rankings, the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G (Exynos) has the best selfie camera out of the Samsung smartphones that have been tested, but it is tied for ninth place in the current chart on 137. Looking at the selfie photo provided by the Galaxy S23 Ultra here, with the camera believed to be a 12 MP, f/2.2 sensor, it’s not hard to imagine Samsung hitting new review heights in this specific department.
