If you felt Alan Wake 2's Mind Place was an interesting concept that wasn't fully realized, The Roottrees Are Dead could be a game for you. It's a potent mix of mystery and logic puzzles that tease your brain and make you feel accomplished when you discover the next chain in the thread.
Designed by Robin Ward, initially for the 2023 Global Game Jam, it has been updated with brand-new illustrations, a new interface, and an original music score.
The game is set in 1988. The Roottree sisters and their parents have been killed in an air crash, leaving behind an estate worth over a billion dollars. The money must now be spread to the rest of the family, but thanks to their great-great-grandfather, that is easier said than done.
You must dig into the family tree to find blood relatives and redistribute the wealth. How do you go about this? With your trusty dial-up modem, of course. Turn the internet upside down in your search for long-lost relatives.
As you find more connections and deduce their place on the tree, new evidence will become more obscured, and the story will throw new twists along your way. The Steam version also includes a bonus family tree to complete after you finish the base campaign. The Roottrees Are Dead has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam.
