HP ZBook Firefly 14 G9 laptop in review - Mobile workstation with more performance after updates
After our original review of the current HP ZBook Firefly 14 G9 with disappointing performance rates, the manufacturer improved the performance with updates. However, further updates including the BIOS version 01.04.10 again worsened the CPU performance a bit. This means a lot of extra work for us when testing and this situation is also problematic for customers because you never know how the performance will turn out after the next update.
In the following article, we will focus on the impact of the updates on the CPU and GPU performance and how the performance increase affects the surface temperatures under load and fan behavior. All other information can be found in our original review of the ZBook Firefly 14 G9.
Performance - CPU and GPU now faster
In our original review of the ZBook Firefly 14 G9 (and also the larger ZBook Firefly 16 G9 with identical cooling) we were surprised about the low power limits of the components because the Core i7-1265U was only allowed to consume 12 watts after a short peak of 25 watts and the Nvidia T550 just 20 watts. Of course, this had a massive impact on the performance, and HP was also surprised by the results, which led to some updates from the manufacturer.
The graphics card is now allowed to consume 30 instead of 20 watts and the power limits for the processor were raised to 33/51 watts. These values were also achieved, but HP has minimally reduced the performance again with further updates. Theoretically, the values of 33/51 watts are still valid, but the value is no longer stable.
Processor - Core i7-1265U
Due to the increased power limits, the Core i7-1265U in the ZBook is now much more competitive than with the old settings, especially under short-term load, and there is now also a clear advantage over the old model. Due to the increased power limits, the Firefly 14 can now also access the full single-core power of the performance cores, which in the case of the Core i7-1265U requires around 21 watts at 4.6-4.7 GHz. However, the situation does not look really good because the clocks fluctuate during multi-core load and we would have preferred a constant level here. It simply has to be said that the high power limits quickly lead to very high chip temperatures, which the cooling must first cope with. Just because Intel allows a maximum consumption of 51 watts in the U-series CPUs, it does not always make sense to set the limits higher.
Cinebench R15 Multi loop
At the same time, it has to be said clearly that the current AMD CPUs like the Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U in the HP EliteBook 865 G9 offer much more consistent and also better results in the multi-core loads at 25 watts. Intel has an advantage with the performance cores in single-core mode, but it also needs more power.
In battery mode, the processor is allowed to consume 30 watts for the first 10 seconds in multi-core tests and then drops to 15 watts. In single-core mode it is 17 watts and later only 15 watts, so the full performance is not available here either. Further CPU benchmarks are available in our technology section.

Graphics card
After the updates, the dedicated T550 GPU from Nvidia is now allowed to consume 30 instead of 20 watts, and in the GPU benchmarks the advantage is 10-20%. Thus, there is now also a clear advantage over the old Nvidia T500. However, it is also true that the performance is not completely stable after the latest updates and the results are a few percentage points lower, for example, the 3DMark Time Spy stress test is also just not passed.
The higher performance is also noticeable in the gaming benchmarks, as we see an advantage of 10-20% over our original test here as well, depending on the title and settings.
The GPU is limited to 20 watts in battery mode, so the ZBook falls back to the old level here. More GPU benchmarks are listed here.

Emissions - ZBook now with more active fan
The fan has become a bit louder and more active after the update. The high power limits are responsible for this since high chip temperatures are already reached during short load peaks. Therefore, it can happen more often that the fan starts to work in everyday use. We measured 33 dB(A) under pure CPU load (both single and multi-core), and more than 40 dB(A) as soon as the graphics card is also under load.

* ... smaller is better
Temperature
The surface temperatures under load remained practically the same, so the slightly increased performance is compensated by the higher fan speed. However, the analysis of the performance data in our stress test clearly shows that the performance of both components is by no means constant, but fluctuates. Thus, there is still room for optimization here. On battery power, the performance is slightly lower at 15 watts for the processor and 20 watts for the GPU, but at least constant.
Pros
Cons
Verdict - BIOS updates help, but there is still more room for improvement
First of all, it is positive that HP took our criticism in the original review to heart and subsequently released updates to improve the performance. However, further updates were released afterwards, which reduced the CPU and GPU performance a bit. Overall, the compact mobile workstation now leaves a much better overall impression. We assume that the larger ZBook Firefly 16 G9 with identical cooling will also benefit from the updates.
With the updates, the ZBook Firefly 14 G9 now leaves a better overall impression and both the CPU and GPU can now distance the predecessor.
However, besides the positive aspects, it has to be said that the performance of the two components can still fluctuate a bit, especially when the CPU and GPU are loaded simultaneously. Thus, there is still a need for optimization here. There are no changes in the other pros and cons and overall, the ZBook Firefly 14 G9 is now a good compact workstation.
Price and availability
Our test configuration of the ZBook Firefly 14 G9, for example, is available from the online retailer Cyberport for around 2,030 Euros.
