The Framework Laptop 12 is significantly cheaper than the Framework Laptop 13 with prices starting at $549. The base model is only moderately powerful with an Intel Core i3-1315U, but it should nevertheless be ideal for students. On the one hand, the device can be used as a convertible thanks to a 360-degree hinge and a touchscreen, and on the other, all components are relatively easy to replace.
A teardown video from iFixit (embedded below) shows just how easy it is to repair the Framework Laptop 12. As is typical for Framework models, the four ports can be replaced without any tools, allowing the laptop to be upgraded with features such as HDMI, Ethernet or an SD card reader. To get inside the laptop, the keyboard and trackpad can be easily removed without any tools.
A clever aspect is that the keyboard and the motherboard are connected via pogo pins instead of a flex cable, which may be otherwise accidentally damaged during the replacement process. The trackpad can be replaced independently of the keyboard by loosening a few screws. QR codes are found on most internal components, providing links to repair instructions, and replacement screws can even be found inside the case.
The battery, power button, speakers, RAM and the small M.2 2230 SSD can also be replaced in a few simple steps. Even the mainboard can be replaced by simply loosening a few screws, allowing the processor to be upgraded at a later date. Framework also does without adhesive on the display to simplify replacement. Thanks to all these repair-friendly elements, the Framework Laptop 12 receives a perfect iFixit repair rating of 10 points.
