Heavy on options. The Latitude 5490 by Dell is marketed as the notebook equivalent of a safe. The relatively high price tag of this 14-inch productivity device justifies itself with a large number of security options, making this laptop suited for security-conscious companies. We shall not only put its security features through its paces, but also compare it to other productivity-focused devices.

The Dell Latitude 5490's speed, longevity and typing experience combine for an excellent laptop, complete with a zippy SSD and better gaming performance than we expect from a business notebook. But the system is ultimately hampered by high temperatures and subpar screen and speakers that dampen video and distort audio.

Hexa-core for business. Dell's mid-range Latitude 5000 series gets the Coffee Lake-H treatment and dedicated graphics as well. The new 14-inch model with 45 W processor and GeForce graphics outperforms the sibling with ULV processor, but the additional power draw creates more heat and shortens battery life. The display remains less than impressive.

The bottom line is that the Dell Latitude 5491 is a great option if you're looking for a top quality and powerful option on the move and it deserves our gold award based upon this. It has a solid build quality found in the more premium models and the inclusion of a hex core Intel Core i7-8850H gives this a compute performance edge over other similarly priced notebooks on the market.

Dell competes in the business laptop market with AMD CPUs with a rather small lineup. Will the single Dell Latitude model with Ryzen, the Dell Latitude 14 5495, be able to compete with well-known competitors like the Lenovo ThinkPad A485 and the HP EliteBook 745 G5? In some ways it can compete, but our review also uncovered some weaknesses.

Dell Latitude 5400 review – a business device that justifies its high retail price
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
We were also happy with the build quality of this laptop – one of the most recent laptops from Dell that comes in a carbon fiber chassis. Add the great performance to the security features from the manufacturers as well as the optional vPro processors. The result of that is a very good business machine that has a great I/O selection and Thunderbolt support and optional LTE card slot, IR face recognition and fingerprint reader. Expensive laptop, but totally worth it.

Dell Latitude 14 5400-XCC8G

Being in the Latitude range, probably the world’s most famous industrial-executive laptops, the Dell Latitude 14 5400-XCC8G is a sleek business-class notebook. The Latitude 5400 is more mobile and portable thanks to an improved design that is thin and modern. Aside from that, the bottom-mount keyboard contributes to its sleek look and feel. The 5000 series Latitudes were the first to use post-industrial carbon fiber in the design and include up to 16.96% post-consumer recycled material, which prevented over 2 million pounds of carbon fiber from ending up in landfills. As for the display, it is packed with features designed to keep users focused on their work, like the four-sided narrow bezel and anti glare screen. The display installed on the Latitude 14 is a 14" FHD WVA (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare Non-Touch panel. There is nothing holding users back from their best work with scalable memory and storage, including an Intel Core i5-8365U CPU, 8 GB of DDR4 memory and 512 GB of storage. Plus, users can stream video, download and smoothly run applications with improved discrete graphics performance.

To keep the work flowing, there is a high-density battery with ExpressCharge, which allows an 80% charge in one hour. With Dell Power Manager, users can choose from four modes to balance between optimal battery or power performance. User can also start the workday faster by signing in with an optional fingerprint reader integrated into the power button or with the optional IR camera + Windows Hello for seamless authentication. As for connectivity, the Dell Latitude 14 5400 can quickly connect to peripherals with a full range of available ports, including USB Type-C, optional Thunderbolt 3, and legacy ports like HDMI and RJ45. Dell’s unique vPro extensions can also remotely manage and run diagnostics on a fleet of devices, whether they are powered on or off. Furthermore, users can manage all of their Windows 10 endpoints from one console with Dell Client Command Suite and VMware Workspace ONE integration. For additional security, SafeID protects end-user credentials with an optional fingerprint reader on the power button and the FIPS 201 Smart-Card Reader. It is capable of delivering the fast, multi-factor authentication users have come to expect from Dell’s most secure PC portfolio. In conclusion, the Latitude 5400 is great for business usage with a durable chassis, fast performance and a variety of security features. The laptop even offers a comfortable keyboard and long battery life for those who travel frequently.

Dell Latitude 5401 review – a business notebook that packs a punch
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
What should we say? This is an extremely powerful business device. Connectivity is on point, upgradability is great, battery life will last you an entire business day, and will still provide you with some movie time after work. However, there is one thing you need to know. The cooling solution on this laptop is not built for continuous workloads. If you are in search of a laptop for compiling complicated calculations or 3D objects, or even video, this laptop is surely going to thermal throttle on you. If you are going to focus on powerful, but short-lasting loads, there won’t be any problems, whatsoever. Plus, you can always undervolt your CPU and get some extra performance out of it.

Contrary to the trend, Dell has used a somewhat thicker design for the Latitude 14 5410 business mid-range laptop, but it has included nice features like good upgradeability and a large battery in return. These are good ideas, but in the end, the manufacturer slows itself down by not offering an AMD Ryzen 4000 option. In addition, a very bad display is built in.

Dell: Dell is a U.S. manufacturer (based in Texas) of computer hardware founded in 1984 and is one of the largest international manufacturers in terms of both market share and notebook models. Its product line includes desktops, notebooks, storage systems, monitors, servers, printers, consumer electronics and peripherals. In 2023, Dell had an approximate 17% market share of global PC sales, ranking #3 after Lenovo and HP.

For gaming enthusiasts, Dell's Alienware brand is for gaming notebooks.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.

i7-10610U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced on 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.8 and 4.9 GHz (unverified) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2666 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default). Compared to the similar Core i7-10510U, the 10610U supports vPro.

i7-10850H: Comet Lake architecture (4th gen of Skylake) based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates six processor cores clocked at 2.7 GHz to 5.1 GHz (most likely 4.2 GHz with 6 cores) that support HyperThreading. Manufactured on an improved 14nm process (14nm++). The Core i7-10850H supports the management features vPro, TXT and SIPP.

i5-10400H: On Comet Lake architecture (4th gen of Skylake) based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates four processor cores clocked at 2.6 - 4.6 GHz (4.4 GHz with 4 cores) that support HyperThreading.

Intel Tiger Lake:

i7-1165G7: An upper mid-range, quad-core processor of Tiger Lake product family. The i7 is designed for use in ultra-light (yet actively cooled) laptops; it is manufactured on Intel's third-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin. The CPU cores run at 2.8 GHz (base clock speed @ 28 W TDP) to 4.7 GHz (single-core Boost frequency). This i7 features the 96 EU Intel Iris Xe G7 iGPU; it was the second-fastest CPU of TGL-UP3 line-up when Intel initially launched the series in 2020.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

79.37%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
