Anbernic has not released a new gaming handheld in months. While that is typical of most companies, Anbernic introduced new devices monthly throughout 2024. However, it seems that the company may have something underpinned by a new Snapdragon chipset up its sleeve.
To recap, reports emerged last week that Anbernic had teamed up with an unnamed OEM to create a successor to last year's RG556 (curr. $229.99 on Amazon). As we discussed at the time, it appeared that the so-called RG557 contains a 5.5-inch display that outputs natively at 1080p in a 16:9 aspect ratio, as well as a 60 Hz refresh rate.
Additionally, an image shared by Retro Handhelds mentioned a chipset called the 'Qualcomm Snapdragon Custom G2', which we inferred meant the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1. Since then, Qualcomm has unveiled a direct successor that it presented alongside the more powerful Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 and the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2.
Thus, it appears that Anbernic's next Android device will adopt one of Qualcomm's latest chipsets designed for gaming handhelds. If correct, it would see the RG557 shipping with an Adreno A22 GPU and an octa-core CPU split between 1 Prime, 4 Performance and 3 Efficiency cores. Currently, only Retroid is confirmed to be using the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 in a future device.
