82.3% Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 with Ryzen 5 in review: A lot of performance for a small budget | Notebookcheck
The new Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 with the Ryzen 5 5500U processor, NVMe SSD storage, a backlit keyboard, and optional stylus input could be the ideal everyday companion. The convertible presents itself in the test as a compact, lightweight, and yet powerful device.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022) review – affordable and practical
Source: Laptop Media English
Ladies and gents, today, we introduced you to a beastly little convertible called the IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022). Although it was equipped with an older AMD processor, we can’t say that it was a failure. Quite the opposite in fact. Its fantastic dual-heat-pipe cooling solution produced a heroic and managed to give the Ryzen 5 5500U (in our case) the maximum possible headroom we’ve ever seen. And we’ve tested this processor with substantially bigger laptops too. Unfortunately, its memory is soldered to the motherboard, which is not great for future-proofing your laptop. Another nail in the imaginary coffin of this device is the 16GB maximum configuration. Yes, this is plenty, but there is no guarantee that you won’t need 32GB for something a bit more intensive in the future. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022)’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, which is great. However, it covers only 54% of the sRGB color gamut, which essentially means that you miss half of the colors found on the Web. In addition, the glossy surface makes it pretty hard to work outdoors, as the maximum brightness is not high enough to compensate. Obviously, there is the 100% sRGB option you can pick, but its maximum brightness is still pegged at 300 nits. What is not limited, though, is the use of SD cards. Yes, this convertible has an SD card reader. This makes it great for photographers, who can edit their pictures on the go. Well, if they are willing to sacrifice color grading (in the case of our configuration’s display). At the end of the day, the laptop is really comfortable to use. Its keyboard and touchpad are good, but its dedicated Pen is amazing. For one, it sits as a further turn-on for the photographers we just mentioned.

Model:

The latest to join the Lenovo family is none other than the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 Ryzen 5. As far as its design is concerned, this device has a well-built case that is almost exclusively made of plastic. In addition, the 360° rotatable display also allows the laptop to be used as a tablet which can be used in either tent or stand mode. Furthermore, the wide rubber feet on the underside provide a firm grip. It is also worth mentioning that the display can be opened with one hand up to an angle of slightly over 100°.

As for its display, the IdeaPad Flex 5 comes in with a large 14-inch display which is covered by a glossy screen that is unfortunately only a little bit anti-reflective. The webcam's lens is located just above the display, and it can be covered using a built-in mechanism. In terms of its connectivity, this device features two USB-A 3.1 ports, a USB Type-C port, an HDMI output, a 3.5 mm headset jack, a fingerprint reader, and an SD card reader. It is worth noting that the USB Type-C power adapters as well as power adapters with a corresponding barrel plug can be used for power supply.

As for its keyboard, Lenovo equips the IdeaPad Flex 5 with a backlit island-style keyboard. While the key travel is extremely short with being less than a millimetre, the keyboard still has clearly defined pressure points and only yields minimally even under strong pressure. Apart from that, the keyboard's backlight has two different brightness levels with the low setting being quite easy on the eyes even in very dark environments. On the other hand, the multitouch-capable ClickPad is pleasantly large at 7.5 x 10.5 cm, and the surface has good gliding properties. Furthermore, the pressure point can also be felt clearly despite the short button travel.

It is also worth noting that the touchscreen of the IdeaPad Flex 5 responds to up to 10 fingers simultaneously. While the inputs are processed quickly and precisely, finger gestures quickly smear the screen with fingerprints. As for its display, this model carries a Full HD display resolution. In terms of its performance, this IdeaPad Flex 5 14 features an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with an integrated RX Vega 7 GPU, 8 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB NVMe SSD. All thanks to its fast processor with six cores and 12 threads, along with the good graphics performance of the iGPU, this device is suitable for more than just everyday browsing and office applications. In addition, even demanding applications for image editing, CAD design, and database management can run smoothly on this device. Overall, it is definitely a great laptop for both personal and professional use.

AMD Vega 7: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 7 CUs (= 448 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 1,600 MHz.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

R5 5500U: A hexa-core APU designed for use in ultra-thin, upper mid-range laptops. The Ryzen features six Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.1 GHz to 4.0 GHz alongside the Vega 7 graphics adapter (448 unified shaders running at up to 1,800 MHz). One could be forgiven for thinking Ryzen 5 5500U is a renamed Ryzen 5 4500U - which is not the case. Ryzen 5 5500U is most similar to Ryzen 5 4600U, the most noteworthy difference between the two being the faster iGPU model of the former.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

82.3%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
