castAway expands vision to give every smartphone a second display, a gamepad, physical keyboard, boombox speaker and portable wireless charger
Successfully funded in December 2019 on Indiegogo the castAway has since expanded from its initial vision of delivering a second screen to almost every smartphone. Compatible with iOS and Android, the original castAway comes in four sizes.
castAway has now developed a suite of accessories, images of which we have included below. According to the company, modules can be swapped freely, allowing the case to be not only a second screen but also a wireless charger, a wallet insert, a gamepad, a physical keyboard and a boombox speaker.
Strictly speaking, the castAway is a Chromium OS tablet. Running on a Rockchip RK3399 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, the castAway communicates with smartphones over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi via an app called MultiTask+.
Overall, the castAway series looks intriguing if the company can live up to its promises. However, we are yet to see castAway publish photos of working prototypes; all product images are renders. castAway has delayed the expected delivery of the dual-screen accessory by four months too, with it now due to ship in October. Meanwhile, other accessories are slated to ship in August. The castAway is not cheap either, with the dual-screen accessory currently priced at US$249.
