Xiaomi's 33 W power bank with 20,000 mAh capacity and an integrated cable has been recalled in China. This portable charger, with the model PB2030MI, is also sold internationally, but there's no official announcement about it from the company on the global website.
As for the Chinese announcement, it states that the Xiaomi 20,000 mAh power banks with the model PB2030MI that were produced between August 2024 and September 2024 are at risk. The company notes that some of these units have "a certain supplier's 126280 battery cell version 2.0."
This battery cell version 2.0 from the specific supplier "may cause certain safety risks in extreme scenarios." While Xiaomi didn't specify the risks, they are likely related to the batteries not being able to operate optimally in extreme weather conditions or temperatures. This could lead to overheating, fire, and explosion.
Xiaomi further highlights that over 146,891 units of the portable were produced during the said time frame, all of which were recalled for safety concerns. Customers who have a unit that fits the recall scope are eligible for a refund, which is CNY 159. That is the same price tag that the 33 W Xiaomi 20,000 mAh power bank launched with.
As of now, it's unclear whether the global units of the power bank were also produced with the 126280 battery cell version 2.0 from the said supplier. However, it would be a good idea for international PB2030MI users to use the portable charger with caution and not leave it charging overnight.
