Xiaomi Poco F6 Pro smartphone review - More than gaming

Hyper Hyper. Poco wants to open a new chapter in the company's history with the F6 Pro. The best display, the best camera, the most power. At least for a Poco. The F6 Pro is set to be the best Poco smartphone of all time. And it breaks with a few traditions. Find out what it can do in our test.

5G Android Smartphone Touchscreen

Poco advertises the F6 Pro with superlatives. Hyper camera, hyper charging, hyper power. However, this is not entirely new. The F5 Pro was also able to impress in our test with a bright AMOLED display, plenty of computing power and fast charging. Classification, on the other hand, is difficult. Poco has been supplying the F series with very fast SoCs for years, but other components have to be compromised.

The manufacturer supplies the smartphone in two color variants: black and white. There are three memory variants: 12 GB RAM and 256 GB memory (580 Euros/~$634), 12 GB RAM and 512 GB memory (630 Euros/~$688) or the top version with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB memory (700 Euros/~$765). Our test model has the largest configuration and is black.

Case - Poco relies on glass and metal

Poco has also gone all out with the F6 Pro's casing. The smartphone has a metal frame and a glass back. The back is matte and marbled, so fingerprints are barely visible. The area around the cameras, on the other hand, is glossy black and an absolute fingerprint and dust magnet. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not reveal what type of glass is used.

The lenses on the back are clearly protruding, but they are distributed in such a way that the device hardly wobbles when it is placed on a table. The workmanship is very good, the gaps are small and even, and the device can hardly be twisted even with force. The buttons have a good pressure point, but there is slight play on the test device.

Features - plenty of memory and dual SIM in the F6 Pro

The Poco flagship relies on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 16 GB of RAM in our test device. The memory is also generous with 1 TB UFS 4.0. However, the memory is not expandable. The F6 Pro accepts two physical SIM cards, but eSIM is not supported. NFC for wireless payment is on board, as is an IR blaster that can be used to turn the smartphone into a remote control. Wireless charging, as with the predecessor, is no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the USB-C port only supports USB 2.0. In conjunction with a Samsung 980 Pro hard disk, we achieved transfer speeds of 47.05 MB/s. The F6 Pro is USB OTG compatible and supports exFAT and NTFS.

Software - F6 Pro not yet with all AI features

The Poco F6 Pro is delivered with Android 14. The security patch is from July 2024 at the time of testing. According to Xiaomi, the device will be supplied with security updates for four years and will probably receive two major Android version updates.

The Poco gets its UI from the parent company Xiaomi - HyperOS 1.0.5 runs accordingly. An optional app launcher is available. A large number of third-party apps are installed ex works, but these can be easily deleted.

Special features of the Poco F6 include AI features, but these were not yet fully active at the time of testing. The smartphone is supposed to be able to display automatic subtitles with the help of AI, but this is currently only possible in a beta version, which requires a separate registration.

The situation is different with the "AI image engine". The resolution of videos can be scaled up by AI, as can the calculation of additional images for smoother videos. Videos can also be edited afterwards with HDR effects. These functions can already be activated, but AI image enhancement appears in the settings but cannot be selected.

Sustainability

Sustainability is not the focus of the Poco F6 Pro. The manufacturer does not provide any information on material extraction or recyclability. However, Xiaomi offers a trade-in program for purchases via the website. The smartphone's packaging is also almost plastic-free. The device itself and the case are wrapped in compostable film, while the rest of the packaging is made of cardboard.

Communication and GNSS - no 6 GHz network with the Poco F6 Pro

We test the Wi-Fi reception of the Poco F6 Pro in conjunction with our reference router, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000. Although the Poco smartphone is supposed to support WiFi 7, the F6 Pro does not connect to the 6 GHz network in the test.

However, the existing transmission is stable and the transmission values are roughly in line with the class average. The smartphone also supports 38 mobile phone bands, so a connection should work well globally. In practice, the connection of the F6 Pro works as expected.

Phone functions and voice quality - F6 Pro with clear transmission

Poco relies on the Google app for telephony in the F6 Pro. The program is clear and self-explanatory, but you won't find any special functions. The smartphone supports VoLTE and calls via Wi-Fi.

The voice quality with the Poco smartphone is good. Background noise is usually filtered out and voices are transmitted clearly. The earpiece and speaker are also loud enough for hands-free calls.

Cameras - F6 Pro also copes with low light

Selfie with the Poco F6 Pro.
Selfie with the Poco F6 Pro.

Until now, Poco has clearly focused on performance and gaming with its own devices. The F6 Pro softens this strategy. The device should not only be fast, it should also deliver good images and videos.

The centerpiece is the 50 MPix main camera with OIS and Light Fusion 800 sensor. According to the manufacturer, it should be particularly bright. It is flanked by an 8 MPix ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2 MPix macro camera. A 16 MPix camera is used on the front.

The F6 Pro records videos with a maximum resolution of 8K and 24 FPS, but only without HDR. With a resolution of 4K, 60 FPS is possible, and HDR mode can be selected at 4K, 30 FPS. Strong video stabilization, on the other hand, is only possible with a resolution of 1080p. Recordings with the front camera are generally only possible in 1080p.

The results from the main camera are impressive. Images are sharp and have a good dynamic range. Only at close range does the sharpness drop significantly. The saturation of the images is very strong overall.

Even photos taken in poor lighting conditions are generally good. The software does not simply brighten up all areas, but creates atmospheric images. The images from the other lenses fall significantly short in comparison. The ultra-wide-angle camera is usable, but can be distorted.

Selfies are possible with the front camera, but they are not on the same level as the main camera. The F6 Pro also offers a Pro mode for manual adjustment of white balance, focus, exposure time and ISO. A teleprompter function for videos is also integrated into the software. The AI functions cannot be operated in the camera app. They also do not appear in the gallery, but can only be activated centrally in the settings.

Accessories and warranty - Poco supplies case and quick charger

The scope of delivery of the Poco F6 Pro is extensive. The manufacturer includes a 120-watt power supply unit in the box. In addition, a protective film is already applied to the display, which is well aligned and did not come off during the test period.

There is also a case with a large cut-out for the cameras as a free bonus. Poco specifies a warranty period of 24 months for the smartphone in Germany.

Input devices & operation - Arrow-fast face unlock on the F6 Pro

Poco uses the Google keyboard ex-works on the F6 Pro. In the test, inputs were mostly error-free. Inputs are also reliably recognized at the edges. The protective film applied at the factory makes the display feel a little dull and the gliding properties could be better - but it is not really annoying.

The smartphone can be unlocked using an optical fingerprint scanner and 2D facial recognition. Both worked very reliably in the test. It is usually not necessary to scan your finger because the camera unlocks the smartphone in a flash. The lock screen can be skipped if desired.

Poco relies on an X-axis vibration motor. The vibration is pleasant, but the motor is clearly audible.

Display - The Poco F6 Pro achieves 4000 nits

Subpixel display
Subpixel display
PWM dimming mode
PWM dimming mode

The best display in a Poco smartphone - that is the manufacturer's claim. It has a size of 6.67 inches and a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. However, it is not an LTPO panel. According to the DRM Info app, levels are played at 60, 90 and 120 Hz. The rate can be fixed at 120 and 60 Hz in the settings, otherwise the software takes over the adjustment.

The AMOLED display has a resolution of either FHD+ or WQHD+, and the software can also make changes here depending on the content. The color scheme can also be adapted to individual preferences or the ambient light.

Poco advertises a maximum brightness of up to 4000 cd/m². We actually achieved this in our tests. We measured 4015 nits, but only when displaying HDR content. In the APL18 test, it is still 1292 cd/m² with the ambient light sensor activated. Without the sensor, the F6 Pro achieves a maximum of 716 nits.

We also noticed screen flickering with a frequency of 120 Hz in our measurements. However, the frequency can be increased to 3840 Hz with the help of a PWM dimming mode. However, we only measure this frequency from 26 percent brightness. At minimum brightness, it is 515 Hz.

It is nice that the F6 Pro offers a real always-on display that lights up permanently or according to user-defined times if desired.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 120 Hz
Amplitude: 16.76 %

The display backlight flickers at 120 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) .

The frequency of 120 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8799 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White

The brightness of the F6 Pro is sufficient to be able to use it comfortably outdoors in sunlight. The smartphone only offers a special boost mode for sunlight without using the ambient light sensor. The automatic adjustment works reliably and quickly.

The display of the Poco F6 Pro also impresses with its viewing angle stability. Content can be easily viewed by several people at the same time. Colors are displayed faithfully even from acute angles.

Performance - The F6 Pro has power and a fast memory

Performance is one of the core competencies of Poco smartphones, and this is also true for the F6 Pro with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The F6 Pro thus leaves the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion and the Realme 12 Pro+ with Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 far behind and is roughly on a par with the Tensor G3 in the Google Pixel 8a and the Exynos 2200 in the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE.

In everyday use, the F6 Pro flies through all conceivable tasks, and the generous RAM is also helpful. However, the extremely fast UFS 4.0 memory, which outclasses the comparison devices with its transfer rates, also plays a large part in the high working speed.

Emissions - F6 Pro with throttling

Temperature - High temperatures despite cooling chamber at the Poco

With the F6 Pro, Poco emphasizes the size of the vapor chamber that is used to cool the device. The manufacturer speaks of "LiquidCool Technology 4.0", which is intended to ensure that maximum performance can be provided over a long period of time.

Nevertheless, we measured a maximum of 44.8 degrees Celsius (~112 degrees Fahrenheit) on the front of the device under extreme load. The F6 Pro also throttles significantly in the benchmarks. However, the smartphone remains operable at all times and can be touched without any problems.

Battery life - Long breath and fast charging with the F6 Pro

Energy consumption - The F6 Pro gets greedy under load

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Poco F6 Pro has two faces. At rest, the energy consumption is low and around the class average. Under load, however, the SoC becomes greedy. A comparison with other devices that use this SoC shows that this is not just due to the hardware. Poco seems to focus more on top performance than on economy.

Battery life - F6 Pro lasts a long time and charges with 120 watts

In our realistic WiFi web surfing test, the Poco F6 impresses with a good battery life. We achieved over 15 hours with the display switched on. This puts the F6 Pro around the class average. However, the smartphone's performance is hardly challenged in this test. The 5000 mAh battery drains much faster during extensive gaming.

In addition to the good battery life, the Poco smartphone also impresses with very fast charging times. The device can be charged with a maximum of 120 watts and a corresponding power adapter is even included. This means that the F6 Pro can be charged from 7 to 100 percent in 23 minutes. The software can be used to set whether the device should charge at maximum power or a little slower.

- other lenses significantly weaker

Verdict - More than just power

In review: Poco F6 Pro. Test device provided by Xiaomi Germany.
In review: Poco F6 Pro. Test device provided by Xiaomi Germany.

With the F6 Pro, Poco has put together a well-rounded overall package that can do much more than just gaming. The camera, for example, impressed us in the test. The main camera in particular delivers sharp images and does not fail even in difficult lighting conditions. It's a shame that the other lenses can't keep up this level, but it's bearable.

The premium feel is evident in the materials used. Poco relies on metal and glass for the F6 Pro. The smartphone is also very well made.

It is pleasing that the manufacturer is not only looking for new talents, but also upholding the old virtues. The F6 Pro delivers plenty of computing and graphics power as well as an enormously fast memory. The latest games are no problem, even in the highest resolution.

With the F6 Pro, Poco is moving away from pure gaming and performance smartphones. The device thus loses some of its focus, but at the same time becomes interesting for a broader target group.

The long battery life also fits in well with this. It's all the better that the F6 Pro can be charged with up to 120 watts and that the charger is even included in the scope of delivery. The 120 Hz AMOLED panel also impresses with good brightness reserves and a crisp, sharp display.

However, the F6 Pro is not perfect either. We would like to see eSIM support, for example. In addition, the device does not connect to the 6 GHz network. The smartphone would also benefit from longer update support and a jack connection. A USB 2.0 port does not fit into the concept of the hyper-fast smartphone.

Overall, however, the F6 Pro is a successful overall package that will appeal to a large target group, especially thanks to the camera upgrade and the great display. The price is also right, especially considering the large amount of memory and the scope of delivery.

Price and availability

The RRP for an F6 Pro with the smallest configuration is 580 Euros (~$634). A surcharge of 50 Euros (~$54) is payable for the version with 512 GB of storage space.
