Xiaomi: One billion Redmi smartphones sold in just ten years
Xiaomi has announced that it has sold one billion Redmi smartphones. This number coincides well with the time spent on market, as Xiaomi managed to reach this number in just 10 years: Redmi was founded as a Xiaomi sub-brand in mid-2013. In 2019, Redmi was spun off and thenceforth run as a more or less independent sub-brand. Redmi smartphones generally cater to a low price range than Xiaomi's high-end flagship smartphones, but the Redmi series also aims at a good ratio between price and performance. While the Redmi series initially only consisted of entry-level devices, strong mid-range models with the Redmi name are now also available. For example, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G, which we reviewed this summer, is a smartphone with a fast and bright AMOLED display and fast charging that is available for just USD 179.99 at Amazon.
Considering that one billion smartphones have been sold since 2013, this equates to an average of over 100 million Redmi smartphones sold per year, which is an enormous number. By comparison, Apple managed to sell over 226 million iPhones in 2022. Xiaomi was able to sell 30.5 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2023 alone, although this corresponds to a decline of 23.5% in a meaningful comparison to 2022.
Speicifc announcements relating to new products or announcements of a strategic nature were not associated with the news of the sales milestone; the launch of new smartphones is expected with the Redmi K70 Pro, K70 and K70E.
