WhatsApp parental controls for teens: what parents can and cannot see

WhatsApp is giving parents more say over their children's accounts. On September 30, the messenger announced parental controls for teens on the WhatsApp blog. Parent and teen set them up together. According to WhatsApp's help pages, the controls are meant for teens aged 13 to 17, and the parent has to be at least 18. Both have to agree to link their accounts, so a parent cannot turn this on without the teen knowing. Children under 13 already have their own parent-managed accounts.
Groups, Status and profile photo
Parents choose who can see their teen's profile photo and who can add them to groups. In WhatsApp's words, "If a teen wants to relax any of those settings, they'll need their parent's approval via a parent-set PIN." Parents also get a notification when their teen joins or leaves a group. TechCrunch reports that a notification also arrives when a group reaches 30, 100 or 250 members. Parents can also decide how their teen uses Channels, whose Status updates they see and who sees theirs.
A stricter setting for Meta AI
The new part is the Meta AI setting. Parents choose between the default 13+ setting and a stricter option called Limited Content. WhatsApp's post does not say what the stricter option switches off. According to TechCrunch, it "disables private processing-based features like incognito chat and message summaries." Parents who want to keep Meta AI as narrow as possible for their child should pick Limited Content.
What parents cannot see
Content stays private. "Even with controls turned on, your teen's personal messages and calls stay private and protected by end-to-end encryption," WhatsApp writes. Neither parents nor WhatsApp can read or listen to them. Parents control contacts, groups and visibility. They cannot see content. Apple's approach on the iPhone is covered in our article on the new parental controls in iOS 27.
WhatsApp has not given a date for every region. The help center says the controls "are rolling out gradually and may not yet be available in your region." Both phones need the latest version of WhatsApp for Android or iPhone. Meta already faces limits on teen use elsewhere. In August, a US court capped teen use of Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp is also testing a setting for single chats. According to WABetaInfo, Advanced Chat Privacy is being renamed Restricted Chat. In a restricted chat, media is not saved to the gallery automatically and the chat cannot be exported. WABetaInfo adds that "it is not possible to use Meta AI features within the conversation," and the chat only works on the primary phone. So far it is only in the Android beta 2.26.39.11, and there is no date for the regular app.
