Touted as the only commercially available volumetric display, the Voxon VX2 is the company's latest entry into the space of 3D image visualization.

For those unfamiliar with Voxon's volumetric holograms, a volumetric hologram is a 3D display composed of a matrix of LED  lights rotating in a cylinder and blinking in a sequence to produce the illusion of a 3D image. For the Voxon VX2, this translates to a matrix with a resolution of 8 million voxels per volume and a refresh rate of 30 volumes per second—the company credits using "VLED" technology to enhance the experience even further. According to Voxon, VLED technology represents the technology stack behind the imaging processes controlling the LED matrix. Voxon claims that VLED technology allows unprecedented control over the LED matrix. Additionally, VLED provides for the production of products that can vary in size and resolution without needing to change the underlying architecture.

Specifically, The Voxon VX2 can produce a cylindrical image that is 256 mm in diameter and 256 mm in height with the entirety of the internal space available for 3D images. To control the VX2, users must use Voxon's Unity workflow to load their 3D files onto the display, and standard 3D file formats are supported. To interact with the display, the Voxon VX2 will ship with a D6OF (six degrees of freedom) controller to use when manipulating the 3D objects being displayed. Voxons software will also extend the display's compatibility with other hardware to bring additional input options such as motion sensors, game controllers, and custom hardware.

Given the niche nature of this type of display, the use cases are expected to be just as unique. Voxon envisions the VX2 as a display that would be well utilized in public displays or exhibitions and a tool used in trade shows or similar retail applications. However, the $6,800 asking price is a serious investment for most. Fortunately, for those who would like to experience what it would be like to use the display, Voxon offers a VX2 simulator over on the Voxon website.
