From a purely mechanical point of view, electric drivetrains are much less complex than modern internal combustion engines, which usually results in significantly lower maintenance costs. However, if the centerpiece of an electric car fails, the associated repair costs are often astronomical. This is exactly what happened to a Tesla Model S owner, who didn't lose his sense of humor and decided to dispose of his car in a rather dramatic and explosive kind of way.
A man from Finland named Tuomas Katainen had only recently bought a used 2013 Tesla Model S, when the expensive EV broke down at the side of the road after he drove it for just 932 miles overall. It took almost a month until his local repair shop contacted the Tesla owner with the worst possible diagnosis. The battery of his Model S could not be repaired and needed to be replaced for €20,000 (about US$22,600).
Katainen ultimately decided not to pay for this expensive battery replacement. He apparently approached the people behind a popular Finnish YouTube channel with the idea of blowing up his Tesla Model S instead, which is easier said than done. But with the help of 30 kilograms of dynamite, the electric sedan was given a proper sendoff with a gigantic explosion which can be seen in the spectacular video embedded below this article. Needless to say, an environmentally-friendly disposal of the Tesla Model S would have been a bit more appropriate, but certainly less sensational.
