Stark Varg: This electric motocross bike from Sweden throws shade at its gas-powered competition
Even though most people may primarily think of Teslas and other electric cars, electric vehicles can actually come in many different types and forms. As it turns out, there are also exciting developments in the motorcycle industry, in which electric bikes are becoming more and more prevalent. In terms of dirt bikes (helmet from US$69 on Amazon), a Swedish company has now made headlines by revealing its very first high-performing motorcycle with the vibrant name Stark Varg. This motocross bike supposedly puts gas-powered 450cc competitors to shame with its 80 horsepower electric motor.
To make things even more interesting, Stark Future claims that the pre-orderable Varg is the fastest dirt bike on the planet, even though the manufacturer has yet to share data on the top speed and acceleration. The electric motorcycle features an almost daunting 938 Nm of rear wheel torque, which unsurprisingly is much more than comparable gas-powered motocross bikes in this segment. However, electric dirt bikes are often severely limited by their batteries, which have to be light and therefore are often lacking in terms of capacity.
The air-cooled 32kg battery in the Stark Varg on the other hand has a capacity of 6 kWh and apparently provides enough power for a full moto at MXGP intensity or up to 6 hours of casual trail riding. Thanks to the IP69K rated water resistance, prospective owners of the Stark Varg don't have to be afraid of riding in wet conditions or through large puddles. The Swedish company has also posted a thorough presentation video on YouTube, in which the development and more technical details and specs of the Stark Varg are discussed. Prices start at US$11,900 for the less powerful 60hp configuration, and delivery dates for the electric motocross bike are scheduled for late November for US-based customers.
