Video: The Touryst for PlayStation 5 is the first 8K 60fps game on next-gen consoles
If you are one of the lucky gamers who somehow managed to snatch a much coveted PlayStation 5 console (from US$1,299 on Amazon), you may have noticed that Sony's next-gen console prominently features the 8K logo near the upper right hand corner of its retail box. However, up until now there was simply no game that could truly be rendered at a ridiculously high 8K resolution.
This has now changed. The small developer Shin'en Multimedia from Munich, Germany has now made history by releasing the first ever game that is being rendered at a resolution of 7680x4320 pixels on the PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, while Sony's next-gen console may be technically capable of 8K gaming, its firmware does not yet allow the machine to output a true 8K signal, and most players probably have not yet upgraded to an expensive 8K TV anyway.
This means that The Touryst is only rendered at 8K internally, but the console downscales that image to 4K in order to put it out on your TV. It is basically a form of supersampling anti-aliasing, but it nevertheless results in a sharper image with crisper edges. On Microsoft's Xbox Series X console, the game is only rendered at a native resolution of 6K in comparison. The Touryst also offers a 120fps mode with an accordingly lower resolution.
