Superlight electric dirt bikes, which occupy the space between electric mountain bikes and full-fledged enduro bikes, are becoming increasingly popular. After Surron, another Chinese manufacturer is now looking to expand its presence in this quickly growing market segment, and Velimotor’s recently unveiled new two-wheeler called the "VMX08" looks quite promising to say the least.
Most notably, the electric dirt bike turns heads with its extremely low weight of just 47.5 kilograms (105 lbs). Its 72-volt electric motor with 6,000 watts or around 8 hp of peak power matches the comparable Surron Light Bee X. The competitor also has 220 Nm of torque and can accelerate to up to 62 miles per hour, while the 45 Ah battery can store enough energy for a range of up to 68 miles on more leisurely rides. Furthermore, the Velimotor VMX08 can accommodate fairly heavy drivers who weigh up to 330 lbs.
In terms of price, the off-road capable electric motorcycle has a wholesale price of US$3,080 according to the German publication MotorradOnline, but that amount does not include any shipping or import fees. Actual retail prices for the Velimotor VMX 08 currently range from US$6,499 to US$6,999 according to RideApart. Due to its fairly impressive top speed, buyers should also check if the electric motorcycle is street legal in their respective state or region. Either way, the electric dirt bike looks like a fun little Surron Light Bee alternative that may actually be worth its price tag.
Update: This article has been edited to clarify the difference between wholesale pricing and the actual retail price of the Velimotor VMX08.
