Valencell has revealed a cuffless blood pressure monitor at CES 2023, which it claims is a world first. The gadget aims to help you to track hypertension by measuring your blood pressure using your finger, which the company suggests makes it easier to take regular readings. The measurement is completed in under one minute, using a small probe you touch with your middle finger. Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors built into the gadget measure reflected light to gather data about your blood flow, which is then analysed by an AI algorithm to determine your blood pressure.
The medical gadget can provide diastolic and systolic readings, which are displayed on an integrated screen. Plus, you can connect your smartphone via Bluetooth to view your results in an accompanying app. You can also use the app to set reminders to take measurements and view data trends over a period. In the future, Valencell plans to add coaching to the app, recommending meals and workouts to improve heart health, and allow integration with digital healthcare platforms.
Valencell has applied to the FDA for approval of its new fingertip blood pressure device, which it hopes to receive by the end of the year. Unlike a cuff, the device does not require calibration and will be sold directly to customers. The company has said that it currently expects the device to cost US$99, though it has yet to indicate a launch date.
