The Ulanzi VF-01 is an optical viewfinder that attaches to a camera's hot shoe, allowing you to look down at the camera to compose your shot. A mirror and three lenses display the field of view of a 28mm lens, but frame lines also allow you to see the field of view of a 35mm or 50mm lens.
This makes the viewfinder suitable for many current compact cameras with fixed focal lengths, such as the Fujifilm X100 VI, the Leica Q3 and the Ricoh GR IV, but also for cameras with interchangeable lenses, as long as a lens with a suitable focal length is used. According to Ulanzi, the viewfinder is particularly suitable for subjects that are at least five meters away. Due to the lack of parallax correction, photographers should be aware that the frame lines will not exactly match the actual field of view if the subject is much closer to the camera.
The viewfinder can be folded down to protect the lenses and reduce the size for easier transport. A magnetic closure on the top keeps the mechanism securely closed, allowing it to be opened with a single hand movement. The viewfinder measures 45.2 × 38.2 × 44.2 millimeters and weighs 63 grams, but Ulanzi does not include a carrying case.
