There are a good number of single board computers (SBC) out there that have reasonably capable hardware. But to use them, you need to connect the board to a couple of things, which includes a monitor. Well, UUGear wanted to make things a bit easier by attaching a 5.5-inch touchscreen display to its Vivid Unit SBC.

Among all the products that UUGear currently offers, the Vivid Unit has to be the most interesting one. It's because the SBC comes with an attached 5.5-inch touchscreen display.

This configuration of the computer eliminates the need to connect a monitor to get things done. The Vivid Unit also comes with a built-in speaker and a microphone, which means the only thing you need to operate it is a power source. Now, while the SBC does have a pocket-sized body, it's not actually a smartphone or a tablet.

But UUGear does expect the Vivid Unit to be used for a variety of portable DIY projects, such as a customized tablet, mini and low-power laptop, and retro gaming console. However, it should be noted that the hardware is a bit dated. It packs the Rockchip RK3399 CPU, a processor that's seven years old now. This six-core CPU is paired with 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32 GB of eMMC storage.

The good news is that it's the same CPU found inside the PinePhone Pro and PineBook Pro. Thanks to that, there have been a good number of Linux developments on this processor. This should make it easier to get your DIY project started with the Vivid Unit single board computer.

On that note, UUGear offers two different operating system images for the Vivid Unit single board computer. One of them is a general purpose Debian 11 Bullseye image. The other is also based on Debian 11 but comes with RetroPie software, making it easier to get retro games emulated on the SBC.

Besides, there are many ports and connectors on the Vivid Unit, including one USB Type-C, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A, one Gigabit Ethernet, and a 40-pin Raspberry Pi-compatible header. You can learn more from the images, spec sheet, and video attached below. As for the pricing, the board is currently available at €99 (about $106.49) on the official website.
