Toyota could release a bZ4X GR Sport, according to recent reports. Rumors of the performance variant of the car started earlier this year when Toyota showcased the Toyota bZ4X GR Sport concept car at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The GR trim SUV had a sportier design than the standard model, with matte black body panels and larger tyres, but it did not provide extra performance. Now it seems that a production version of the EV is being considered more seriously.
Daisuke Ido, the bZ4X's chief engineer, told Move Electric that they were discussing the idea with the GR Sport team. Currently, Toyota offers GR Sport versions of its Yaris, Corolla and C-HR models. Ido suggested that a critical problem to overcome when developing a bZ4X GR Sport would be how it would feel to drive; the handling and performance would need to match the other vehicles in the GR line-up.
Ido went on to say that the power and torque were not a concern. According to Toyota, the E-TNGA platform used in the bZ4X allows for a wide range of products, including sportier models. The bZ4X launched in the UK earlier this month; the highest specification model has a 150 kW drivetrain that can deliver 336 Nm of torque.
