Toyota bZ3: Images and some specs of the BYD-powered Tesla Model 3 competitor revealed by Chinese authority
The reputable Japanese automaker Toyota is more of a latecomer on the soaring EV market, but with the recent launch of scarcely available bZ4X, the manufacturer is finally selling and delivering its very first all-electric SUV to a few lucky customers in North America and Europe. The smaller and more affordable electric sister model, which features several BYD components and will supposedly carry the name “Toyota bZ3”, has now been unveiled by a Chinese authority as it is scheduled to take on the incredibly successful Tesla Model 3 by the end of this year.
In the four pictures that have recently been published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the BYD-powered Toyota bZ3 is depicted in a classic black and a fancier two-tone paint scheme. These pictures of the upcoming electric sedan also confirm that the EV is largely based on Toyota’s bZ SDN concept car, which was officially revealed last year. With a length of 186 inches, a width of 72 inches and a wheelbase of 113 inches, the Toyota bZ3 will be very similar to the Tesla Model 3 in terms of exterior dimensions. Furthermore, the EV’s curb weight will be right around the 4,000 lbs mark.
From a technical point of view, the Toyota bZ3 will be powered by batteries and motors made by the Chinese automotive company BYD. There will be at least two model variants with a peak performance of 135 and 180 kW, respectively, but the top speed of both models will purportedly be limited to 99 mph. The better-performing version will be equipped with larger 18-inch wheels, but both variants will be rear-wheel drive only. There are no details on a possible all-wheel drive model, and the battery capacity and projected range of the Toyota bZ3 also remain up in the air. Last but not least, it remains to be seen whether or not Toyota will eventually sell its upcoming Tesla Model 3 competitor in other markets outside of China.
