The latest consumer Canvio family offers one of the highest capacities available from the manufacturer.

The Canvio Ready will be available in capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, 2.5 TB, and 3 TB. According to Toshiba, the latest 3 TB model can store of up to 856,500 photos (6 MP, 3.5 MB each), 789,000 music files (128 KB/s, 4 minutes each), or 2460 movies (13.5 MB/s). The USB 3.0 interface is backwards compatible with older computers where only USB 2.0 is available.

The simple plug-and-play operation of Canvio Ready devices enables immediate use on Windows PCs. Thus, separate installation is not required. The Canvio HDDs are equipped with shock sensors to protect data from sudden falls and movements. A typical model measures just 119 x 80 mm with a height of 15 mm for configurations 1 TB or smaller and 21.5 mm for configurations larger than 1 TB.

According to the manufacturer, the Canvio drives include the usual paperwork and micro-USB Type-B cables. The family will launch this September starting at 55 Euros, 69 Euros, 99 Euros, and 189 Euros for the 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, and 3 TB models, respectively.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s. When I'm not managing day-to-day activities and US review articles on Notebookcheck, you can catch me following the eSports scene and the latest gaming news.
