Even though external SSDs do not stand out as real alternatives when compared to the HDD offers, due to lower capacities and higher prices per TB, the improved speed rates certainly prove helpful. Add a stylish rugged enclosure and competitive pricing, and you get Silicon Power’s latest Bolt B80 external SSDs.
Capacity-wise, the new Bolt B80 SSDs come in 120 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB variants. Thanks to the included USB 3.1 Type-C connection, the Silicon Power SSDs provide up to 500 MB/s read speeds and up to 450 MB/s write speeds. Certainly not on par with NVMe speeds, but better than what external HDDs can provide.
The slick and circular enclosure is not just for the looks. It is made of machined aluminum and can withstand the military free fall test, plus it is water and dustproof. Its diameter is 2.95 inches, thickness –0.45 inches, and it only weighs 1.87 oz.
No info on pricing for the time being, but the new SSDs should be shipping in the coming weeks.

I first stepped into the wondrous IT&C world when I was around seven years old. I was instantly fascinated by computerized graphics, whether they were from games or 3D applications like 3D Max. I'm also an avid reader of science fiction, an astrophysics aficionado, and a crypto geek. I started writing PC-related articles for Softpedia and a few blogs back in 2006. I joined the Notebookcheck team in the summer of 2017 and am currently a senior tech writer mostly covering processor, GPU, and laptop news.
