Even though the HDD business seems to be greatly affected by the significant improvements occurring in the SSD sector, the low prices of the good old hard disk still appeal to many users who are searching for large capacity external backup solutions. Western Digital specifically targets this group of users with their freshly updated My Passport Ultra external 4TB HDDs.
The new external HDD models feature an all-new metallic enclosure that comes in matte black-gray or white-gold finishes. The new HDDs are outstandingly thin, especially considering that these drives pack up to 4TB of storage space. Thus, the 1TB model is 0.53” thick, while the 2, 3 and 4TB enclosures measure 0.85”. All drives are USB 3.0 compatible and feature WD’s proprietary Backup software for local data backups. WD also included their latest WD Discovery software that can be programmed to back up online data from Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox and Google Drive. Data protection is handled through the reliable AES-256 hardware encryption feature coming with the WD Backup suite.
WD is already selling these new models directly on their wd.com site or through select retailers around the world, however, it looks like the 2GB model is already out of stock on the wd.com site. All My Passport Ultra drives are covered by a three-year limited warranty. The 1TB model costs $79.99, while the 4TB will set you back only $139.99.
