Reviews for the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410

Toshiba Satellite U845W Review
Source: Ubergizmo English English Archive.org version
If anything, the U845W serves as a warning: even if a new device looks crazy and cool, for instance, this laptop with two touchscreens on the lid, or this “unbelievably great” tablet designed by a software giant, or this tablet/laptop hybrid with a sliding mechanism reminiscent of dumbphones, it still might be a ultimately failed experiment. The U845W, with its superfluous widescreen, certainly fits in that category, and while it was fun to think about and use for a few days–”hey, this is what it would be like if laptops had a cinema screen”–I wouldn’t want to use it for more than a week. Simply put, no matter what your use case, there’s a laptop out there that’s a better fit for you. It probably has a 16×9 screen.

Toshiba Satellite U845W Ultrabook Review: Going Wide at 21:9
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
I've come away from my time with the Toshiba Satellite U845W with a largely favorable impression. What Toshiba has achieved here is very respectable and worthy of attention: they've designed a notebook that's pleasing to look at and by and large excellent for productivity. In terms of build and design, I found the U845W to feel pretty durable. The materials used are solid and the whole thing feels well crafted.

I’m not convinced that a laptop with a 21:9 aspect ratio display makes sense if you view it as a computer built for watching videos. There just aren’t that many videos available with that aspect ratio — especially since the Toshiba Satellite U845W doesn’t include a Blu-ray drive (or any optical disc drive). Most of the videos you’re likely to watch on this computer are online videos or movies you’ve downloaded from the internet.

In a world where every notebook is accused of looking too much like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, we give credit to Toshiba for coming up with a very attractive and unique design that's not in the least Applesque. And we give another dose of praise for thinking outside the box. Every laptop overall looks and acts much like every other laptop.

We like to give PC makers credit for trying something out of the ordinary, and the Satellite U845W-S410 is anything but ordinary. Setting aside its ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio screen, it's a reasonably appealing ultrabook—OK, maybe half a pound heavy for an ultrabook, and with the not uncommon affliction of a stiff and shallow keyboard—but well put together, even a little elegant with its clutch-purse styling, and with plenty of ports.

If the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 were to be judged purely upon its performance and feature set, it would fare rather well, offering solid processing power and a healthy selection of ports and storage space. Unfortunately, the headlining feature of the laptop—the movie-friendly widescreen display—mars the overall user experience and distorts the dimensions of the laptop. For a superlative movie watching experience, the Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 offers a 1080p display and excellent speakers, while the similarly-equipped Lenovo IdeaPad U310 and HP Envy 4-1043cl are both less cumbersome and less expensive.

80% An Ultrabook With a Very Wide Screen

Bigger concerns abound, though: The screen is hopelessly dim and washed out, and the touchpad is utter junk — rattling around when you tap on it. The U840 isn’t just boring in comparison to the U840W, it’s actually unpleasant to use. Regardless of what you think about the U840W, give the U840 a pass.

The Toshiba Satellite U840W is designed for multimedia above all else -- it has exceptoinal speakers and its extra-wide screen allows many movies to fit in it perfectly, but it's also very useful for multitasking. We like the build quality and the design of the notebook and think it looks very stylish. We just wish it had a matte screen, a slightly better keyboard and faster networking features.

Toshiba Satellite U845W review: an Ultrabook with a screen size all its own
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
There are so many Ultrabooks on the market that the available options may seem to blend together. So, if for nothing else, the Satellite U845W stands out for its unique display. Sadly, the actual display quality is merely mediocre, and while it's a treat to watch videos that don't exhibit letterboxing, that doesn't happen nearly enough. And truly, that's the big problem here: media isn't tailored to that super-wide aspect ratio.

Still, it is a cool-looking laptop, and would be great for casual use. It will certainly turn heads and be a conversation starter. But if you need a laptop to get work done, you can find better alternatives.

Now that ultrabooks have hit the mainstream, the evolution of slimmer laptops has started to undergo Darwinian mutation. The media-geared Toshiba Satellite U845W has an extrawide 21:9 screen and Harman-Kardon speakers, but no DVD or Blu-ray player. The screen is a novelty act that offers some benefits, but it's really no better than your standard laptop for most uses.

Those looking for a cinematic experience--or simply looking to get the benefit of nearly two screens in one--will find the Toshiba Satellite U845W an intriguing option. For $999, you get a 14-inch Ultrabook with a wide, bright screen, excellent audio and seven hours of battery life. The biggest issue holding this notebook back is its mushy keyboard. We'd be a lot more willing to live with this system's wider frame if the typing experience were better.

14.40":

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.

71.25%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
