The Toshiba Satellite U840 is the latest consumer Ultrabook from the company and the first to offer a 14-inch display, which was nice and vibrant when we got the chance to see it in action. The hardware load-out is fairly typical for the latest generation of Ultrabooks, with a third-gen Intel Core processor and up 8GB RAM. There is a 32GB SSD to keep things speedy and 500GB of hard drive on offer.

Toshiba's 14in Ultrabook offers a good mix of light weight, thin design and useful features. It's a good all-round Ultrabook, but it could use a better screen and keyboard, as well as some tweaks to its build quality. It performed decently in our tests, but it comes with lots of pre-installed software that can sometimes get in the way -- be prepared to uninstall some stuff!

The Toshiba and Samsung and other 14in Ultrabooks show that the Intel Ultrabook strategy is having an impact. While initially promoted as being for superslim 11in and 13in machines, the Ultrabook is really about forcing the laptop makers to stop being lazy and deliver laptops with better portability, usability and battery life across the board. And judging by the Toshiba U840, laptop buyers can only benefit.

Toshiba’s Satellite U845 is a bit of a mixed bag. They ended up with a pretty solid notebook from a design point of view, which is an encouraging step in the right direction for Toshiba. I’m very hopeful that the level of design and build quality found in their tablets and Ultrabooks will trickle down to the rest of Toshiba’s lineup, and having a well designed Satellite is the first sign of that happening.

The Toshiba Satellite U840-S406 doesn't aim to push the envelope and, therefore, succeeds in delivering a well-designed ultrabook with a good set of features that sports a reasonable price tag. Everyday users looking for a slim, portable system for basic tasks will doubtless be pleased with it. Meanwhile, for power users looking to get the most out of their ultrabooks, the Editors' Choice-winning Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 is still the system to beat.

It’s not always easy for ultrabooks to stay below the $1,000 mark and still be high quality. The U845 has made cutbacks in some critical areas, and as a result has made a highly portable machine for $850. The U845 is not spectacular in any one way, but altogether Toshiba has made a mid-range ultrabook that is both well assembled and enjoyable to use.

Overall, the Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 is a great option if you need just a little extra power for work on the go, but don't feel like shelling out cash for a desktop replacement.

Toshiba’s Satellite U845 is a more attractive product than the previous Toshiba Z835 for most consumers. It is significantly heavier, to be sure, but it makes up for that with much higher build quality and excellent all-around performance at a reasonable price. However, this new Satellite also fails to provide any compelling reason why it’s better than the alternatives. It’s not the most attractive Ultrabook or the quickest or the best value.

The time has come for more reasonably priced ultrabooks, and it seems like every Windows laptop manufacturer has one coming out this back-to-school season. The Toshiba Satellite U845 is a serviceable but generic-feeling 14-inch ultrabook that, in a quest to become more affordable, has fallen into a grey zone: not all that compact, not all that rich in features.

If you can find it priced under $800, as we did at Staples while writing this review, and you like its brushed-aluminum aesthetics, the Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 is a decent ultrabook buy. It's especially worth looking at if you find the 13-inch screens on most other ultrabooks a smidge too small. Its WiDi wireless abilities make up a bit for its 1,366x768 resolution, especially if you’ve got a 1080p TV that you can easily connect it to.

The Toshiba U840 is priced Rs. 53,500, which makes it quite an expensive purchase. If it were somewhere close to 40K, then I could have recommended it, but we have the issue with the keyboard and trackpad which is a big let down. The U840 had the potential to be a very good candidate for an Ultrabook but the high price and a few issues in critical areas together prove to be a damper. I’d say, give this one a miss.

If you're in the market for a thin and light, not-too-expensive laptop, the Toshiba Satellite U845 isn't exactly a slam dunk, but it's certainly worth considering. While the build quality, battery life and overall performance are about on par with competing machines, we've tested models with more comfortable keyboards, and if you do your homework you'll find laptops offering better specs for the same money.

Toshiba's Satellite U845 is an attempt to make a slightly larger but still affordable ultrabook under Intel's new second generation guidelines. For the most part, the slightly large 14-inch screen doesn't really add that much more to the system other than being slightly larger and heavier than the 13-inch ultrabook. The one benefit is that it does feature more ports such as Ethernet.

The $719 Toshiba Satellite U845-S402 undercuts many Ivy Bridge-powered Ultrabooks on price and features a sleek design and long battery life. The Toshiba Satellite U840-10V just doesn't quite overcome the compromises that have been made to create something a fair bit cheaper than most Ultrabooks. The spec list is good, but it falls down in the more practical aspects. If you want something smaller and lighter than the average home laptop, but don't want to pay through the nose, it's a reasonable choice. But paying £150 more will get you a much better machine.

The Toshiba Satellite U845t-S4165 is a solid all-around ultrabook that boasts a zippy processor, solid battery life, and an eye-catching slender chassis. Were it not for its limited storage capacity and so-so keyboard, it would have offered stiff competition to the Acer Aspire M5-481PT-6144, our Editors’ Choice for entry-level touch-screen ultrabooks. Still, it remains worthy of serious consideration.

There's a reasonable chance you'll end up hearing about the Toshiba Satellite U845T on a semiregular basis from us. That's because, at $799 for a 14-inch laptop that's ultrabook-thin, with a touch screen, Intel Core i5 processor, and 128GB solid-state drive, it's about as middle-of-the-road as laptops get.

Touch may be the headline feature in the U845t, but it’s not the most important improvement. That honor goes to the 128GB solid-state drive. Most competitors sold at a similar price – and particularly those with a touchscreen – use mechanical drives with a small solid-state cache. A single solid-state drive offers a clear improvement over a combo configuration.

With the Satellite U845T-S4165, Toshiba has successfully combined fast Core i5 performance, an SSD and a touch screen for a reasonable price. Best of all, this Ultrabook lasts 7.5 hours on a charge, outlasting most other touch Ultrabooks. Although the keyboard literally falls short, this 14-inch Windows 8 notebook richly deserves its 4-star rating.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

71.53%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
