By virtue of its broad, 17.1-inch display, the $699 Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7815 stands out among budget back-to-school laptops (most of which feature 15.4-inch displays). But that feature is the only way the Satellite L355D-S7815 distinguishes itself; the rest of its feature set is merely adequate, its battery life below average, and (thanks to the inclusion of an AMD processor) its performance was consistently at the bottom of our benchmarks. Unless you need a 17.1-inch display, there are better entry-level laptops than the Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7815.

The Toshiba Satellite L355D is a tough laptop to critique. One the one hand, its feature set is merely adequate, its battery life below average, and (thanks to the inclusion of an AMD processor) its performance--while sufficient for such basic computing tasks as Web surfing, watching movies, and word processing--can't match that of laptops based on Intel processors. The 17.1-inch Toshiba Satellite L355D is average in every way, except for its below-average price.

Although its components and benchmark scores don’t hold a candle to higher-end desktop replacements’, the Toshiba Satellite L355D offers acceptable performance for the price. And we’re generally pleased with the amount of performance this $799 machine puts out. If budget and screen size are your number-one priorities (and battery life isn’t much of an issue), this is a strong choice.

The Toshiba L350 series notebook offers consumers an excellent budget desktop replacement notebook with a great deal of features for a low starting price of $749. As a mild refresh from the previous P200 series notebook the L350 gives you a slimmer and lighter body, as well as a smudge and scuff resistant matte paint finish.

Big display at a great price. The price of a notebook is the most important aspect for most customers. Nearly all manufacturers are responsive to this trend and also offer a number of low price models. Toshiba has already offered its Satellite L-series, which consists of very reasonable beginner's office notebooks, for a long time. The Satellite L350, which is equipped with a big 17 inch display and Intel's Dual-Core technology, is available at a great price.

Entry-level desktop-replacement laptops are almost as popular as netbooks in many online stores' bestseller lists. The appeal of models like those in Toshiba's Satellite L350 series lies in their size. Big screens and keyboards make them no less usable than a desktop PC, but they can still be carried around and hidden away when not in use. If you lack the space for a cheap desktop PC, the Toshiba Satellite L350-17P is a capable alternative with precious few compromises when it comes to usability. The only real weak spot is the under-powered 3D graphics chip, but, since that's only an issue for 3D games, it won't matter to everyone.

This Toshiba Satellite follows the example of our current top sub-£500 model, the Sony VAIO VGN-NS20. The latter has crowned our budget chart for a few months thanks to its balance of price and performance, a feat that the Toshiba Satellite L350-235 carries off with only slightly less aplomb. While the Sony Vaio VGN-NS20J remains available, it’s still the choice of the sub-£500 notebooks. Yet the Toshiba Satellite L350-235's comparatively vast LCD could make it attractive for those who don’t need to travel. Otherwise, the Sony’s superior speed, battery life and wireless capabilities make it the better purchase.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

ATI Radeon Xpress X1250: It is an onboard graphic chip, implemented on AMD M690G. Sometimes, it is also called Mobility Radeon X1250. It is based on X700 design but with less pixel- and vertex pipelines. It hardly suited for players.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

ATI Radeon Xpress 1250: Chipset graphics based on the dedicated X300.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: The Mobility HD 4650 is based on the Desktop 4650 architecture, but features a lower clock rate of memory and core. Depending on the core clock (450-550MHz possible) and the used memory (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 with 600-800 MHz possible) the mobile 4650 can show a different performance. The current consumption of the chip alone ranges from 15-25W. Features Avivo HD video features.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.

TL-60: First in 90nm, later in 65nm produced dual-core processor based on the K8 core. Compareable performance to a 1.8 GHz Core Duo CPU with 1MB Level 2 Cache (Celeron Dual Core e.g.).

Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.

T2390: Entry level dual-core processor based on the Merom core (and therefore with 64 Bit support).

T3200: Entry-level dual core processor with a slow performance due to the old Merom core and a small level 2 cache.

T4200:

Entry class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.

T4300:

Entry - middle class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.

AMD Athlon 64 X2:

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.1 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

3.2 kg:

70.8%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
