Inspired by real-life conflicts around the world, like the siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. Most war games offer experiences from the front lines or from a command perspective, but here the focus was on ‘collateral damage’: the sufferings of the nameless victims of war.

Gamers will assume control of a group of civilians trying to survive the siege by fortifying themselves inside a broken-down house and trying to stay alive by gathering resources, items, and tools, all while avoiding the two opposing forces at war and other scavenging groups. Maintaining the characters' health, hunger, and mood is vital to surviving until a ceasefire can be reached. 

This War of Mine received critical acclaim for its unique portrayal of war; a common refrain among fans of the game was the unique experience they had never been privy to before. Some fans spoke about how a game’s atmosphere completely immersed them in the pains of war.  A lot of gamers who found the game wasn’t their cup of tea mainly said they expected a survival game, but not in this way, where it was survival through resource management.
