Untrusted is a challenging online multiplayer game for 10 to 16 players that blends hacking with social deduction. For a limited time, it is free to claim on Steam.
If you enjoy social deduction games like Among Us and have a fascination with hacking, the indie title Untrusted might be right up your alley. The online multiplayer game supports 10 to 16 players and pits two opposing teams against each other: NETSEC hackers, who aim to gain root access to a fictional system, and undercover agents who secretly infiltrate the group to sabotage the operation from within.
Untrusted thrives on deception, strategy and communication. Players hack virtual systems, analyze logs, take notes and attempt to uncover who can truly be trusted. With 27 playable classes and more than 100 unique skills, no two matches play out the same. However, the game is intentionally complex and demands a willingness to learn. It has received around 1,000 reviews on Steam, with 84% of them being positive.

Untrusted was developed by playuntrusted and published by evolvedlabs in May 2021. The hacking-focused social deduction game typically costs around $5 and, according to SteamDB, has never received a discount higher than 25%. Somewhat surprisingly, it is now available completely free until February 1. While official Steam Deck compatibility (available on Amazon for $675) has not been confirmed, the game’s low system requirements – 4 GB of RAM and a 64-bit CPU – suggest it should run smoothly on most modern handheld PCs. That said, because the gameplay is designed around mouse and keyboard input, controller-based play may present some challenges.

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
