Developed by Total Mayhem Games, the ‘We Were Here’ series is a first-person puzzle game with gameplay similar to that of an escape room. Originally developed as an entry in a student project for the Independent Games Festival 2018, the game went on to win the Best Indie Game Award in 2017 and was later released on Steam, where it was well received by players.
The original game, We Were Here, saw two friends split up in an old castle, called Castle Rock. The players are then tasked with solving puzzles and communicating via walkie-talkies. The sequel, released in 2018, was called “We Were Here Too.” This title was well-received and praised for improvements over the last entry, seeing a notable rise in positive reviews, with a common theme being the depth of the puzzles and the two-player mechanic.
2019 saw the release of yet another entry in the series, We Were Here Together, which received somewhat less than a favorable reception, mainly due to performance issues. Multiple players reported issues with party-making and staying connected in the game.
In 2022, the developers added the then-latest addition to the series, We Were Here Forever, starring the adventuring duo, the player characters, who find themselves waking up in a somewhat familiar place, the mysterious Castle Rock. Through multiple entries, fans have tried to solve the mystery behind the castle, only to be brought back to it yet again.
The last entry, released in 2023, called We Were Here Expeditions: The FriendShip, was a standalone addition to the beloved series and saw the two friends solving mysteries and puzzles aboard a ship while out at sea alone. Its release saw a warm reception from long-time fans, who once again praised it for its puzzles and co-op mechanics, but noted a slight deviation from the original gameplay, where narrative was not the main focus, but the ability to replay puzzles, granting the players different medals ( bronze, silver, and gold). Players expressed their satisfaction with the game but noted it was much shorter than the previous installments.
Currently, the We Were Here series is rated between Positive and Very Positive on Steam, where they are available to purchase individually or as a bundle at a significant discount. Gamers can pick up this bundle at 60% off for $15.14 until the 26th of Jan.
