The Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 comes with a new S Pen, which has a hexagonal design inspired by the classic pencil. Together with the Samsung tablet, we were able to test the new pen of the new premium tablets (prices start from $899, among others at amazon).
It is very pleasing that the S Pen is still included in the scope of delivery and not must be purchased separately as with the Apple iPad Pro.
The Samsung S Pen is still light and compact
The new S Pen for the Tab S11 and Tab S11 Ultra comes with an IP68 rating and is therefore protected against water and dust. The new design of the Samsung stylus ensures that the S Pen still sits comfortably in the hand, but the stylus appears more compact and thin compared to a Apple Pencil or Honor Magic Pencil 3. Whether you like the design and the in hand feelling is a personal preference, but we prefer the semi-circular, more ergonomic shape of its predecessor. The compact case of the new S Pen also seem somewhat undersized compared to other stylus - especially in large hands.
Weighing just 8 grams, the S Pen is still very light, compared to a Apple Pencil Pro which weighs more than twice as much. This issue is also very individual. Here we find arguments both for (comfort during long-term use, better usability with small hands, ...) and against (appears less valuable, ...) the lightweight.
The tip of the stylus makes the difference
Where the new S Pen really impresses, however, is in its use. The pen tip measures around 1 millimeter and is softer than the competition, which makes writing and drawing feel very natural. The Samsung pen also works very quietly, which we find very pleasant to use.
Technically, the S Pen impresses with its high pressure sensitivity of 4,096 pressure levels and fast response times. Even though Samsung does not provide any information on latency and the competitors sometimes support significantly more pressure levels, we cannot find out any disadvantages in everyday use. However, the lower pressure sensitivity could have a negative impact on professional artists.
