With the Xperia 5 II, Sony is offering a high-end smartphone that has a notch-free and 21:9 OLED screen, three Carl Zeiss-branded rear-facing cameras, a reasonably compact chassis and a dedicated camera shutter button. Sony has now confirmed the official release date of the Xperia 5 successor too.

Sony has unveiled the release date of the Xperia 5 II, and it is slightly later than we previously expected. Originally, we thought that the company might use IFA 2020 to announce the device, but it has now confirmed that it will unveil the Xperia 5 II on September 17. Specifically, the device will arrive at 16:00 JST (UTC+09:00) at an event that will be live-streamed on its Xperia YouTube channel.

Yesterday, Evan Blass revealed the first render of the Xperia 5 II, confirming that the device would follow the design language of the Xperia 1 II. From what we can tell, the Xperia 5 II will have three rear-facing cameras, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, slimmer bezels than the Xperia 5 and a mysterious third hardware button. The ToF sensor from the Xperia 1 II is missing, but Sony has included a 3.5 mm jack, which is always welcome.

Sony may only speak about the Xperia 5 II at the event on September 17, but a full announcement of the Xperia Pro is overdue. The company teased the device in February, but it remains unreleased in any market. Essentially, the Xperia Pro is an Xperia 1 II with bells and whistles that Sony has designed for content creators. The device will work with Sony's professional cameras and includes a 4-way 5G mmWave antenna.
