Qualcomm raised some eyebrows by deviating from its Snapdragon 8x5 naming scheme for its flagship chipsets. However, the Snapdragon 888 still followed the same nomenclature, for the most part. Its successor, the putative Snapdragon 898, on the other hand, could follow an entirely different naming scheme.
Veteran leakers Ice Universe and Digital Chat Station have heard Qualcomm could name its upcoming flagship chipset the Snapdragon 8 Gen1. Thankfully, its internal codename is still SM8450, and future products will continue to follow that format. Then again, the information is just a rumour, and it should be treated as such until Qualcomm proves otherwise. We should know soon enough, as the Snapdragon 898/8 Gen 1 launch is just around the corner.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen1 could herald a new era of smartphone SoCs for Qualcomm. We also get a rough idea about how upcoming chipsets could be named. For example, the Snapdragon 780G 5G successor would be called the Snapdragon 7 Gen1, and so on. That could probably work for the high-end Snapdragon 8xx series chipsets. Differentiating between mid-range hardware, on the other hand, would be exponentially more difficult.
