Tesla will soon be placing drivers in a digital queue when they head to a Supercharger to ensure an orderly charging process in some scenarios that have led to quarrels and even fights breaking out at charging lots for various reasons.
The automaker's charging team calls waiting for a Supercharger stall to free up an "edge" or "corner" case, and claims that those constitute about 1% of all experiences. The virtual Supercharger queuing is already in pressure testing at select sites to gauge performance, and will be rolled out widely next quarter.
Drivers who key in a Supercharger site will be placed on a waitlist according to their arrival times if the lot is busy with wait times and, potentially, individual stall number properly displayed.
If the stall is then assigned exclusively to their vehicle, this will free them up to roam around instead of sitting in the car at all times, or having to quarrel with "bad actors," as Tesla calls them, for their place in the line.
Tesla is currently rolling out an update that addresses other common complaints about the Supercharger experience. It will now display details like parking charges, Supercharger floor at multi-level lots, or if the location requires an entry code.
Tesla Supercharger location details
- Valet-only Parking
- Pay to Park
- Access Codes
- Parking Floor
The above iconography will be displayed while the driver searches for a Supercharger location. The site specificity like paid or valet parking will keep being displayed even when it has been chosen as a destination. Upon arrival, the navigation card will display the access code details, or which floor is the Supercharger located on at multi-story parking lots.
