Tesla expands Auto Shift mode to include K-turns

About three years ago, Elon Musk said that all Tesla cars that can run FSD will eventually get the Auto Shift option, where the car automatically chooses whether to choose Drive or Reverse.

Called Autoshift out of park, the feature is available on the 2021 and up Model S/X, as well as on the Cybertruck and the Model 3 Highland.

A previously leaked 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance interface showed an intriguing upgrade of the Auto Shift option called "Autoshift between D/R" which would make the car choose whether to shift into Drive or Reverse based in the situation.

Lo and behold, with the latest 2024.14.3 Tesla software update, this new feature that was marked for developers only in the leaked Model 3 Performance interface, is reported arriving to the Model S and Model X first.

Tesla's more expensive sedan and SUV vehicles are now getting the ability to use Auto Shift in K-turns, i.e. go into Drive, then Reverse, then Drive again to go in the opposite direction on a road.

There is also a new gear indicator interface that occupies a much smaller part of the screen and allows for an expanded media player interface at the bottom, for instance.

The new three-point turn capability will undoubtedly make it into the Model 3 and Cybertruck as well at some point.

Mum's the word if and when Tesla's bestselling Model Y will get Auto Shift, but the upcoming Juniper facelift that will most likely be stalkless to save on production costs, would be a good bet.

There are already companies that sell physical Model Y control buttons, and some like Enhanced Auto even plan to ship stalks for the Model 3/S/X this month.

On Tesla vehicles that have it now, though, Auto Shift can be activated via the Controls > Pedals and Steering submenu.
