Tesla has shared specific data on the public acceptance of Full Self-Driving (FSD) for the first time ever. The company’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering opened up during a segment of Jay Leno’s Garage.

Tesla has consistently remained vague about the number of FSD package sales it has recorded. Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, would simply say the figures were ‘much higher’ when private estimations came to his attention. These analyses are typically based on data from independent trackers, regional estimates, or credit card analysis firms.

However, the auto giant is giving the closest thing to specific figures for the first time. According to Lars Moravy, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, the acceptance rate is ‘increasing a lot’. The FSD package take rate across all Tesla vehicles has increased from less than 10 percent and entered what he jokingly referred to as ‘teens’. The Model S/X are the forerunners, with about half of their buyers opting for the FSD package.

Going by this hint, the more affordable Tesla vehicle options, Model 3 and Y, have a lower adoption rate of the advanced driver assistance system. It appears that the upper scale clientele is more willing to pay more for the optional feature.

While Moravy’s data may indicate that FSD adoption is more widespread than previously speculated, it remains to be seen if Tesla’s recent focus on free trials and expansion to new countries will stimulate demand for the package.
