Tesla is preparing to roll out Version 14 of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The update came to light after CEO Elon Musk responded to a post on X from Jason Calacanis, who is an investor in Tesla.
FSD is Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance system, designed to let cars drive themselves, although it still requires human supervision for now. The goal is full autonomy everywhere, and each new version is meant to make the system smarter and safer.
Calacanis had praised his recent experience with the older FSD V13.x, calling it ‘absolutely perfect’. Still, he acknowledged the company’s cautious approach to releasing updates gradually, urging others to ‘chill and let them cook’.
Musk replied by confirming that FSD V14.0 will go into wide release next week, followed by V14.1 about two weeks later. By the time V14.2 arrives, he said Tesla’s cars with FSD should feel almost ‘sentient’, driving more naturally, like a human is behind the wheel.
Recently, Musk has been building anticipation for V14 in his posts on X. He described it as Tesla’s second most important AI/Autopilot upgrade since FSD V12 launched in late 2023.
Among the expected improvements are fewer ‘nags’ as many drivers have found the frequent steering-wheel prompts in the older version frustrating. The software will also be powered by neural networks with ten times more parameters than before, a boost that should significantly improve decision-making.
For clarity, Musk emphasized that FSD V14 is not the same as the Unsupervised FSD currently being tested in Tesla’s Robotaxi fleet in Austin, Texas. That version can already operate without a human driver at all.
