The Tesla Cybertruck goes off-road and makes a splash at the King of the Hammers. Did the E-pickup break down under the extreme conditions? Or was it just a case of minor damage? While some are celebrating the electric truck as a hero, others are seeing it as a fragile high-tech toy.

The Tesla Cybertruck's off-roading capabilities are currently proving controversial on social media. A few days ago, the King of the Hammers (KOH) off-road race in the Mojave Desert in Johnson Valley, California, was a testament to the off-road capabilities of the electric pickup truck.

There are elements of dirt racing in the race, but the drivers also have to cope with steep climbs and brutal rock crawling. The Tesla Cybertruck did not take part in the competition. Instead, many different owners brought their respective e-pickups for demonstrations, such as doing donuts on sand. Optima Batteries provided the charging equipment for the event.

There were also many owners of Rivian, Tesla Model Y, Hummer H1, various jeeps and also motorhomes whose off-road capabilities were on display. A number of the Cybertrucks had to face up to the adverse conditions during the event, with rumors that some of the vehicles had broken a number of parts. Other Tesla trucks, however, remained unscathed. It is worth noting that other brands of vehicles, such as a Ford Raptor, were also affected.

However, one Cybertruck is said to have suffered serious damage and the rear wheel drawbar broke in two while doing a donut, according to rumours on social media. The wheel ended up in a completely tilted position. A video taken by Optima Batteries was shared on Reddit. However, you can only see the rear wheel wobbling for about a second towards the end of the video. A lot of people were wondering if it might just be a software problem that could be fixed with a differential lock update.

Some on Reddit suggested that a nut had fallen off, causing a tie rod to break. Critics of this theory suggested that the car had previously been stripped down for measurements and 3D scans and that the nut had not been properly tightened when it was reassembled.

Another theory was that it was some kind of test vehicle and that the company behind it had put it through its paces, intentionally breaking something to test its pain threshold. Apparently, the truck was part of a company that manufactures differential locks for the aftermarket.

It is thought that they had subjected one of their products to a load test, only to discover that they had failed to tighten all the bolts to the prescribed torque. At least that's what seems to be rumoured at the moment. The company that caused the damage to the truck is Unplugged Performance. They have finally spoken out:

In the video below, YouTuber DennisCW talks about his experiences with his red Cybertruck at this year's KOH and also gives us some exciting insights into the event as a whole. The Youtuber reports that he finds the vehicle to be very capable off-road and is thrilled with how the Cybertruck handles in the sand and sandy mountains.

Opinions on the futuristic truck are divided. We will probably have to wait for more test reports before we can make a realistic assessment of its off-road capabilities.
