Tangara: Open-source Apple iPod Phone lookalike raises over $150,000 in crowdfunding campaign
Tangara is now selling its eponymous music player, an open-source device that draws heavily on the design of the iPod, arguably more so the iPod Photo than any previous or future iPod models. At any rate, the Tangara drew criticism from many quarters when it debuted in December 2023 for its $249 launch price. Nonetheless, the project has already raised more than $150,000 from over 350 backers at the time of writing.
In summary, the Tangara features a 1.8-inch TFT colour display that outputs at 160 x 128 pixels, as well as a 2,200 mAh battery that contributes to its 150 g weight. Additionally, the Tangara relies upon a Microchip ATSAMD21 microcontroller, which integrates an ARM Cortex-M0+ CPU core, 256 KiB flash memory and 32 KiB RAM. Moreover, the device combines an AT42QT2120 capacitive touch controller for its 'touch wheel', a WM8523 DAC and an INA1620 amplifier, among other components.
For reference, the Tangara project will remain available to back on Crowd Supply until March 14, 2024, at 00:59 UTC. Currently, the project's developers hope to begin shipping units from mid-September 2024 onwards, with Mouser Electronics acting as a fulfilment partner. However, the team behind the Tangara project have already shared hardware and software details on SourceHut, should you wish to assemble the device yourself.
