At this price point, the TCL 40R 5G does everything you could need it to. It’s a dependable workhorse that, while lacking in the flash of a brighter, sharper display and a stunning camera system, offers enough under the hood to justify picking it over other 5G budget options. It won’t outpace your flagship (far from it), but for enterprise purposes, a first phone for a loved one, or even just a backup, it’s hard to say no at this price.

The TCL 40R 5G lands among the top half our battery database with a very good global score. When used moderately, the TCL 40R 5G’s battery lasted more than 2.5 days. Autonomy was very good during the typical usage scenario tests, and when evaluating the individual usages indoor. Overnight, the device lost less than 1% of power per night. However, the 40R 5G’s autonomy performance outdoors was mixed, with a below average showing when using the camera and the navigation, but an excellent one when calling. With a small 15W charger, the TCL 40R 5G charging experience was poor. It took more than 2.5 hours to fully replenish the battery, and the autonomy recovered after a quick 5-minute charge was extremely low. The device’s charge efficiency was also poor, with a high residual consumption of the charger itself when the device was unplugged.

The TCL 40R smartphone brings lots of exciting things under the hood, and there’s no denying that it also got an astounding design layout. But, like many other mid-range phones, there are a handful of flaws in this phone as well. You won’t receive an ultra-wide lens, the resolution is stuck at 720p, no proper video stabilization support, slow charging, and the list can go on and on. Currently, the phone is exclusive to the European smartphone market, and there’s no clear indication about being released on the global stage so far. In that situation, if you want a great smartphone, we would suggest you check out the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro, it’s the most ideal phone that appears in the mid-range segment. Finally, decided what you want according to the requirements.

If you’re considering buying a phone under £200/€200, you’ll understand that you’ll have to make some sacrifices. But if you’re happy with good performance, a modest screen and an OK main camera, the TCL 40 SE is a model to consider. The design TCL has opted for is as expected for a handset in this price range. The screen, on the other hand, could have done with a slightly better resolution (there are competitors that offer it), but the phone makes up for it with all-day battery life. Are there better phones on the market? Yes. Are there better low-end phones? Yes, but that doesn’t detract from the TCL 40 SE. It’s just one of many options.

There are no truly great phones this cheap, unless you consider feature phones a contender for that title. The TCL 40 SE doesn’t challenge that statement. But it may not be a bad buy if the budget is tight. It has stereo speakers, a big screen and loads of storage for a mobile this cheap. The chipset is pretty dreadful, but does not induce too many headaches unless you try to try to actually use the TCL 40 SE while the phone downloads or updates apps in the background. The biggest compliment I can give the TCL 40 SE is I’m not desperate to get rid of it and switch to something else. I have felt that way about significantly more expensive Androids.

The TCL 40 SE phone is undoubtedly a great choice if you are looking for a decent entry-level phone with some necessary features to tweak with the software and to enjoy the usual social media consumption. These things are possible with this phone, and you won’t be disappointed if you set the bar low from the start. The phone got presentable camera quality with good display support. Furthermore, playing causal games won’t be a huge hassle for the phone, while battery life is overall remarkable. But still, the company cut corners to make this phone more cost-efficient for many users. Even after this, it’s worth recommending a deal if you don’t have any problem with slow performance. If you are looking for a decent alternative, you should consider Oppo A56s in the meanwhile.

The TCL 40 XE 5G is not a phone that’s meant to be a game-changer or a flagship killer. It’s just meant to be a good phone for the price, and that’s exactly what it is. This phone has a nice display, solid build quality, and great software. You get all of this for the price of only $100. I think that it should be worth at least $100 more than that. TCL did a great job with this phone, and I highly recommend that you pick one up.

For a $120 prepaid phone, the TCL 40 XE 5G isn’t bad. You get Verizon’s 5G coverage, a decent battery, and a nice lightweight smartphone. If you are using mutiple apps it can boggle down alittle but if it is just a couple at a time its great.

TCL aims to deliver a feature-packed smartphone for an affordable price tag with the 40 XE 5G, and for the most part, they’ve knocked it out of the park. The phone features a few improvements over the TCL 30 XE 5G, such as a bigger battery (5,000mAh vs 4,500mAh) and twice the internal storage (128GB vs 64GB). It’s also $30 less at $169.99 MSRP, making it the most affordable 5G smartphone from TCL to date. In terms of design, the TCL 40 XE 5G feels solid and sturdy, unlike the cheap, flimsy plastic on many budget devices. The stylish black brush metal pattern on the backside goes a long way toward the more premium look of the phone. The left side has a slot for the SIM card and a microSD card to expand the phone’s storage up to 1TB. There’s also a headphone jack at the bottom and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. While the fingerprint scanner is speedy and accurate, I wish it was placed higher, as it sits smack dab in the middle of the side, which can be cramped to reach.

The TCL 40XE is a budget king smartphone that will grant impressive specs and features. Although, there’s no denying that are some shortcomings in this phone, still, it stays strong in the extreme competition of the entry-level 5G phones. You are getting a standard resolution display, average processing power, decent battery life, and good photography. But still, the average storage capacity, low-resolution display, and mediocre video recording are the core downside of this phone. The company also released an upgraded version of this phone, which is known as the TCL 40 X that offers a 50MP instead of the regular 13MP primary lens. So you can check this phone later on. But for now, the TCL 40 XE is a great deal under the $170 budget. If you are looking for an alternative 5g smartphone then you can check out the TCL 40 X smartphone which comes with 5g support in a decent price range.

The TCL 40 X 5G offers good battery life, respectable real-world performance, and accurate face unlocking for an affordable price. It's a good value, especially if you can look past its so-so cameras and lack of an IP rating. Overall, the similarly priced Samsung Galaxy A14 5G remains our Editors' Choice winner in this price range thanks to its higher-quality screen, better software support, and more advanced cameras. If battery performance is a priority, however, the TCL runs longer and charges faster.

The $180 TCL 40 X 5G is a capable phone that largely stands up to my favorite current pick under $200, the $200 Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. When looking at the phones at their full retail price, the $20 difference does buy a lot of meaningful benefits. Samsung's phone includes contactless payment support, two years of software updates and five years of security updates. However, at TCL's $126 Black Friday price, I could see the phone being a tempting deal as long as you understand that it won't be viable to use after security support ends in two years. You'll also be missing out on Android 14, which is already arriving to phones that are receiving major software updates. So if you go with the deal, just know that this isn't a phone you should be holding onto for a long time. But if the TCL 40 X isn't drastically discounted, I would consider similar phones that will get more years of support like the Galaxy A14 5G.

When it comes to inexpensive phones, TCL is usually one of the companies that come to mind. It doesn’t only come to mind because of the low prices. The brand’s emphasis on providing an experience that punches way above its price makes its devices worth the money. Using the TCL 40 X 5G, I had a really pleasant experience. The performance is really good, the gaming is decent, the camera performance is great, and it comes with the latest version of TCL’s Android skin. These are aspects that lead to a very strong overall smartphone experience. I’m able to pick up this phone and use it just like any other device. It doesn’t feel slow or laggy or anything like that. Also, if I want to use this phone as my main camera, I shouldn’t have any issue with the great camera performance. I think that TCL definitely outdid itself with this phone, and I highly recommend that you pick it up.

Undoubtedly, the TCL 40 X equips a petty standard configuration of hardware that is used in older phones like the TCL 40R. However, it’s good to see that company has finally improved the 5G modem capabilities so that users can enjoy faster video calls and use the internet without speed limits or breaks. Although, the camera aspect might not give the best experience. But still, the phone gives a decent viewing experience and appropriate battery life support. All of that combined, the TCL 40 X smartphone comes out a great deal that everybody can check out. If you have a budget of around $200 for a 5G phone, then you can consider this phone in the US market anytime. However, if you are looking for an alternative like Samsung Galaxy M14 for a better performance experience.

One of my first paychecks was used to buy an old Asus MemoPad. I used it to read on my bus rides home. It just about fit in my coat pocket, but it was still cumbersome. Had the TCL 40 Nxtpaper been around back then, it would have been a no-brainer. So long as the general performance doesn’t bother you, you want a more accurate digital reading experience, or just want your high screen time to be a little bit better for your eyes, it’s a great get for a low price. For a few other considerations, check out the best cheap phones right now. If you demand good photography chops, you’re going to have to spring for a Google Pixel 6a. You might even be able to reduce eye fatigue with the Honor Magic 6 Lite and nab a snappier, more responsive user experience in the process. Can’t stretch the budget? The TCL 40R 5G is marginally more capable in everyday performance at around the same price.

Unboxing the TCL 40 NxtPaper smartphone, rocking an 'ePaper' display which mimics a Kindle screen - making for easy reading and clear outdoor visibility. This hands-on TCL 40 NxtPaper review covers the camera tech, gaming, video streaming and other features. Note that this isn't the 5G model, which serves up entirely different specs! That screen is a regular TFT-style phone panel, except that it has a multi-layer coating which creates the matte finish and filters blue light. The TCL 40 NxtPaper has many different display modes, to suit different scenarios. I certainly enjoyed reading books and manga, although movies look a little foggy, lacking in sharpness. Also, the camera tech here on the TCL 40 NxtPaper is basic stuff - as you'd expect at this budget price point.
