Inscryption is a roguelike deckbuilder in the vein of Balatro, but with a distinctive horror twist. It opens in a dimly lit room, where a table holds a simple deck of cards. Across from you sits a shadowy figure – their eyes the only thing visible – inviting you to play a game with unsettlingly high stakes.
At its core, Inscryption revolves around tactical card duels in which creatures are placed on a board, sacrifices are made, and resources like blood or bones are carefully managed. Each card has attack and defense stats, along with unique abilities that open up additional strategic options. Between battles, players explore the cabin from a first-person perspective, solving mechanical puzzles to uncover new cards, upgrades or fragments of information. A defeat sends you back to the beginning – true to the game’s roguelike nature.
German gaming magazine PC Games gave Inscryption a positive review, highlighting its clever mix of strategic deck-building and escape room–style puzzles. The game’s eerie atmosphere and strong narrative also received praise. The testers did note its relatively short playtime of around nine hours and limited replay value. Even so, it earned an impressive 9 out of 10. On Metacritic, Inscryption holds a Metascore of 85 and a User Score of 8.5. On Steam, nearly 140,000 players have reviewed it, with 96% leaving positive feedback.
