In Masters of Anima, players enter the colorful fantasy world of Spark as Otto, a young apprentice learning the art of Anima. As a Shaper, he can summon and command magical guardians to fight alongside him. His journey begins with the kidnapping of his fiancée, drawing him into a confrontation with the golems of the dark Shaper Zharr. The narrative follows a familiar fantasy framework and primarily serves as a backdrop for the action-heavy gameplay rather than a central driving force.
Masters of Anima combines action RPG mechanics with real-time strategy elements. Players control Otto directly while commanding up to 100 guardians simultaneously. These units – ranging from melee and ranged fighters to various specialist types – can be grouped and positioned strategically to maximize their effectiveness. Success hinges on careful management of Anima energy as well as smart upgrades for both Otto and his summoned forces. The game’s boss encounters stand out in particular, requiring sharp multitasking and quick reactions to shifting attack patterns under constant pressure.
Visually, Masters of Anima features a colorful, comic-style art direction with smooth animations and clearly distinguishable unit types. While the levels follow a largely linear structure, they include optional paths, collectibles, and light puzzle elements. There is some room for exploration, but the core focus remains on fast-paced, strategic combat.
The Swiss gaming site Games.ch awarded Masters of Anima a solid score of 75 out of 100, praising its charming world and engaging gameplay. Criticism focused on the weak story, linear level design, and occasionally clunky controls during more chaotic moments. Player feedback on Steam paints a similar picture, with the game holding a 79% positive rating based on more than 400 reviews. On Metacritic, Masters of Anima holds a Metascore of 74, while the User Score stands at 5.3 – though based on a small sample size of just 19 user ratings.
